((Author's pov))

Mittens and sweater paws are the most awesome things in the world.

Why? Because they're the best at covering up the fact that I'm a freak.

Everyone has four fingers on each hand. Everyone, except for me. I have 5 on each hand. And there's 2 types of people: Those who run, and those who beat.

There were only a few occasions when I showed my hands. One was when someone asked "what makes you think you're so special?!" And I simply removed my mitten. She screamed like a little girl in a horror movie.

Another time was when I was at the scene of a crime, and the police yelled "hands up!". I raised my sweater paws, which they demanded for me to remove to prove I didn't have a knife or something. The moment I did, they took one look at my five fingers and ran in fear.

Those instances were funny, but most of the time it was heartbreaking. Once I make a friend, they would turn against me as soon as my mittens are removed. I used a stylus whenever I used my phone so I didn't have to take them off. I hid my five fingers as much as I could.

So many people ran, I began to question if my hands radiated pure fear or something.

Back in elementary school, my teachers always suggested I take my mittens off when it was hot out. I always denied. They learned not to question my choice. In middle school, people finally caught on, and I was bullied heavily.

Once I was locked in a janitor's closet, and when I yelled to be let out, they just said,

"Just pick the lock with that extra finger of yours!"

They called me lots of names, the most common being, "Five fingered freak".

I'm in college now. Nobody knows about it so far. And I'm glad. I only had one friend, her name was Ozomalia, but I just called her Ozzie. She had brown hair and always wore a newsie hat.

I was reading on a bench in the park on campus, absorbed in the Heroes of Olympus book 4. It was my favorite book series.

I felt someone sit next to me. I turned to look at Ozzie.

"Hey Julie, how's it going?"

"I'm doing good, you?"

"I'm managing." There was a small silence. "Hey I have a question."

"Yeah?" I replied, looking up from my book.

"Why do you always wear those mittens?"

My heart rate rose dramatically. I looked around to see if anyone was watching.

"If I tell you, do you promise you won't leave me?"

"Why would I do that?" She said with a smile.

"Because everyone who saw did."

That smile faded as she saw my pained expression.

The silence was loud.

"Ok, I promise." She finally said.

I hesitantly removed my gloves, a small tear leaking from my eye. But I couldn't undo it. She already saw my fifth fingers. Her face was filled with shock. She just kept looking at my deformity.

I started crying, burying my face in my hands.

"I knew it, you think I'm a freak too!"

She tapped my shoulder to get my attention. I looked up at her.

"Y'know, you're not the only one who's a freak."

She reached up and took off her cap. She had weird green horns on the back of her head, strange goat like ears fell almost to her neck.

"Heh, I literally had to wear this stupid hat just to get people to stop staring at me. You're not alone, Julie."

I smiled, wiping my tears and wrapping my arms around her. She held me just as tight. We said nothing for a while.

"If you want somewhere to belong, I think I know a place." She said.

"You do? Where?" I inquired. She chuckled, taking my hand in hers as we walked to the parking garage.

She drove us to an ordinary looking restaurant.

"What is this place?" I asked.

"You'll see!" She replied.

We walked in, seeing a bunch of people that looked normal.

"Hello, welcome in!" The hostess said enthusiastically. Ozzie put what looked like an ID on the counter.

"Welcome back, Ozomalia! And hello to you, new customer! Come right on in!"

The hostess motioned us to follow her. She led us to a staircase labeled "VIP ONLY"

"You're gonna love this, Julie!" Ozzie exclaimed. "Tada!"

We walked into a large lobby area, with multiple side areas. There was an arcade, stores, a dining area, and all sorts of other things. There was even an animation studio!

There were a lot of other people there, who I noticed all had something weird about them. Some had tails, others had wings, and some were literally anthropomorphic animals. Majority had little things about them, like extra fingers and women with beards, stuff like that.

"This is the land of the lost and lonely. Here, you don't have to hide your flaws, you can embrace them. You don't have to be scared. You're free here."

I sniffled in happiness.

"I love you, Ozzie!"

I hugged her as tightly as I could. When I pulled back, I don't know what came over me, but...

I kissed her.
