The entire house hummed with the energy of Durga Puja, the rhythmic beats of the dhak in the background blending with the clatter of bangles and the scent of incense.
Every corner of the mansion was alive with the festive spirit-decorations, chatter, laughter-but my main focus?
The silver plate of prasad in my hands.
Maa, of course, was not happy with my circus, her sharp voice following me like a second shadow.
"Athira! Walk! You're not in a race! If you spill that prasad, I swear..."
I couldn't help but grin as I glanced back, catching Maa shaking her head, her bangles clinking as she wiped her hands on her Saree's palu. Her long dark brown hair was tied in a loose braid, and despite the scolding, her eyes sparkled with affection.
I grinned, practically skipping across the floors.
"Maa, I've got it under control! It's not going anywhere!"
Maa's exasperated sigh echoed behind me.
"That's what you said last year, and you nearly caused a stampede when you slipped."
"Last year was a fluke!" I called over my shoulder, rounding the corner toward Dadu and Dadi.
Dadi, who had been watching me with narrowed eyes, finally spoke up as I came into view. "Athira, if that prasad lands on the floor, don't even think about blaming me."
I laughed, offering her the first sweet. "Come on, Dadi, have a little faith in your granddaughter!"
Dadi took the prasad, her sass ever-present. "Faith? You, child, are an accident waiting to happen." She popped the sweet in her mouth, shaking her head. "God save us all if you start running."
I flashed her a cheeky grin. "Don't worry, Dadi, I've got skills."
Dadu, who had been silently enjoying the show, chuckled softly. "Let her be, love. It's Durga Puja. She's just excited."
