The weekend passed in a blur of rest and preparation, but Emily found her thoughts drifting back to Nathan more often than she liked. She replayed their conversations in her mind, the small moments of tension that had been building between them. She told herself it was nothing more than a work friendship, but deep down, she knew there was something more.

When Monday morning arrived, Emily threw herself back into work, determined to stay focused. The big pitch went off without a hitch, and the client was thrilled with their proposal. As they left the meeting room, Margaret, their boss, clapped them both on the back.

"Great job, team. You two are becoming quite the dynamic duo," she said with a smile.

Emily forced a laugh, but Nathan remained silent, his gaze lingering on Emily for just a second longer than necessary.

Later that afternoon, as Emily was packing up her things to leave for the day, Nathan appeared at her desk.

"Got a minute?" he asked, his tone casual but his eyes serious.

Emily hesitated but nodded. "Sure."

They walked down the hall to a quieter corner of the office, away from the buzz of phones and chatter. Nathan leaned against the wall, arms crossed, looking at her with an intensity that made her heart race.

"I've been thinking," he began, choosing his words carefully. "About us."

Emily's stomach flipped. She hadn't expected him to bring it up so directly, but now that he had, there was no turning back.

"Us?" she repeated, her voice cautious.

Nathan nodded. "Yeah. I think we both know there's something here... something more than just work."

Emily felt her pulse quicken. He was right—there was no denying the connection between them anymore. But acknowledging it out loud felt dangerous, like stepping over a line they couldn't return from.

"I don't want to make things complicated," Emily said, her voice barely above a whisper. "We work together, Nathan. It's... tricky."

Nathan sighed, running a hand through his hair. "I know it is. But I can't keep pretending like I don't feel something for you."

His words hung in the air, heavy with meaning. Emily's heart pounded in her chest, torn between her attraction to him and the reality of their situation.

"I feel it too," she admitted quietly, her voice barely audible. "But I don't know if we should do this."

Nathan's eyes softened, and he took a small step closer. "Maybe we don't have to decide everything right now. But we can't ignore this, Emily. Not anymore."

Emily's breath caught in her throat as she looked up at him. The space between them felt charged, filled with all the things they hadn't said. And for the first time, Emily didn't push the feeling away.
