Monday came too quickly, and as Emily walked into the office, her heart pounded with a mix of excitement and nerves. Things between her and Nathan had shifted—they were no longer hiding, no longer pretending. But the weight of what that meant hung heavy in the air.

They had decided to talk to HR, to be upfront about their relationship before the rumors could spiral out of control. It wasn't going to be easy, but it was the only way to move forward.

Nathan met her outside her office just before their scheduled meeting with HR. His eyes were steady, calm, but Emily could sense the tension beneath the surface. He gave her a reassuring smile, squeezing her hand briefly before they walked in together.

The HR manager, Olivia, greeted them warmly, though Emily couldn't help but notice the slight raise of her eyebrows when she saw them together. They sat down, and Olivia folded her hands in front of her, her expression professional but curious.

"So," Olivia began, her tone neutral. "What can I help you two with today?"

Nathan cleared his throat, glancing at Emily before he spoke. "We wanted to be upfront about something. Emily and I are... in a relationship. We've been careful to keep it separate from work, but we wanted to let you know before any rumors started affecting the office."

Olivia nodded, her face giving nothing away. "I appreciate your honesty. We do have policies in place for workplace relationships, as I'm sure you know. As long as it doesn't interfere with your work or create a conflict of interest, there's no issue."

Emily let out a breath she didn't realize she had been holding. It wasn't as bad as she'd feared. Olivia gave them some additional guidelines, but overall, the meeting was smooth.

As they left the HR office, Emily felt a weight lift from her chest. They had taken the first step. There was no more hiding, no more pretending.

Nathan smiled down at her as they walked back to their desks, his hand brushing against hers in a subtle, affectionate gesture. "See? We'll be fine."

Emily smiled back, her heart lighter than it had been in weeks. Maybe things would be okay after all. Maybe, just maybe, they could have everything—their careers and each other.

But deep down, Emily knew that this was just the beginning. There were still challenges ahead, still risks to face. But for the first time in a long time, she wasn't afraid.

She had Nathan, and together, they could handle anything.

The tension that had been looming over them for weeks seemed to dissipate after their meeting with HR. There was a sense of freedom in finally being able to walk through the office without hiding how they felt about each other. Nathan and Emily could now steal glances, share knowing smiles, and occasionally meet for coffee without feeling the weight of secrecy pulling them down.

But outside of work, their connection only deepened. With the shackles of caution removed, their moments together became more intense, more passionate, and more personal.
