The plan was simple: go back to where it all began—home.
Y/N's mind was swirling with emotions as they gathered at the hiding spot to finalize their next move. After everything they had learned about her father, Jeon Dae-hyun, and his connection to the virus, she knew the confrontation had to happen sooner rather than later. Namjoon, with his brilliant hacking skills, had decoded the device and uncovered the truth about her father's involvement. But none of it felt real until she heard it from him.
They needed answers, and Y/N needed closure.
"I'll go home and ask him," Y/N said, her voice steady despite the chaos brewing inside her. The others had offered to come along, but this was something she had to face on her own.
Taehyung's eyes met hers from across the room, his expression full of concern. "Are you sure you want to do this alone? He might—"
"I'm sure," Y/N cut him off, her voice firm. She appreciated their support, especially Taehyung's, but this confrontation was long overdue. "It's my family. He's my father. I need to talk to him directly."
The group exchanged uneasy glances, but in the end, they trusted her decision. Y/N packed up her things and headed out the door, with a promise from the others that they'd be close by if she needed them. Namjoon had helped secure the area, so they knew she'd be safe—at least from any outside threats. But the real threat was much closer now, and it came in the form of the man she once trusted more than anyone.
Y/N stood outside her childhood home, her heart pounding as she stared at the familiar front door. The house looked just as it always had, a little worn around the edges but still filled with memories of simpler times. Times before the virus, before the world fell apart. Before her father had turned into the man she barely recognized now.
Steeling herself, Y/N pushed the door open and stepped inside. The air felt heavy, filled with an eerie stillness that made her skin prickle. She walked through the hallway, her eyes scanning the familiar surroundings, but her father was nowhere to be found.
"Eomma?" she called out, her voice echoing through the quiet house. "Appa?"
There was no response. Panic started to bubble in her chest, but she forced it down. If her father wasn't here, then where could he be?
Just as she was about to turn toward the kitchen, she heard footsteps behind her. Spinning around, she found herself face-to-face with her mother, who looked pale and worn, as if she had aged years in the short time Y/N had been gone.
"Y/N," her mother said softly, pulling her into a tight hug. "I didn't expect you back so soon."
Y/N swallowed the lump in her throat, returning the embrace briefly before pulling away. "Mom, where's Dad? I need to talk to him."
Her mother's expression faltered, and Y/N could see the worry etched into every line of her face. "He's... in the study room again. He's been spending most of his time there lately. I don't know what he's working on, but—"
"I know what he's working on," Y/N said, her voice hard. "And I need to talk to him about it. Now."
Her mother looked taken aback by the sharpness in her tone, but she nodded and stepped aside. Y/N made her way down the hallway, her feet carrying her toward the hidden entrance to the lab. This was it—the moment she'd been dreading and preparing for all at once. She was finally going to confront her father about everything he had done.
Taking a deep breath, Y/N pushed open the door to the lab. The sight that greeted her was both familiar and alien. Her father was hunched over his workstation, surrounded by an array of screens and machines, all humming softly in the background. He didn't seem to notice her at first, too absorbed in whatever calculations he was running.
But as Y/N stepped further into the room, the sound of her footsteps made him pause. Slowly, he turned to face her.
"Y/N," he said, his voice rough, as if he hadn't spoken in hours. His eyes, once warm and full of love, were clouded with something else now—something darker. "You shouldn't be here."
"I need to talk to you, Dad," Y/N said, her voice steady despite the knot of nerves in her stomach. "About the virus. About everything."
Jeon Dae-hyun's expression hardened, and for a moment, Y/N wasn't sure if he was going to speak at all. But then he sighed heavily, rubbing a hand across his face.
"I was hoping you wouldn't have to find out like this," he muttered. "But I suppose it was inevitable."
Y/N clenched her fists at her sides, anger bubbling to the surface. "Why, Dad? Why would you do this? You created a virus that's destroying everything—people are dying. And now I find out you've been planning something even worse with that controller device? What the hell are you thinking?"
Her father's gaze dropped to the floor, and for the first time, Y/N saw the weight of his guilt etched into his features. But it wasn't enough. It didn't excuse the devastation he had caused.
"I did it because they took everything from me," he said quietly, his voice filled with bitterness. "The government, the military—they used us. They used our family. Your brother... he was just a pawn in their game. And when I tried to fight back, they destroyed me. They made sure no one would ever listen to me again."
Y/N froze. "What... what do you mean? I don't have a brother."
Her father's eyes snapped to hers, filled with a storm of emotions she couldn't untangle. "You did, Y/N. His name was Jeon Hyun-woo. He was your older brother. He died when you were still a baby."
The words hit Y/N like a punch to the gut. She staggered back, her breath catching in her throat. A brother? How could she not know? Why had they never told her?
"You're lying," she whispered, her voice barely audible over the pounding of her heart. "I don't have a brother. Why would you keep something like that from me?"
Jeon Dae-hyun sighed, running a hand through his disheveled hair. "We wanted to protect you. Hyun-woo... he was drafted into the military. They sent him to fight in a war we didn't believe in. And when he died, the government covered it up. They told us it was an accident, but I knew better. They used him, Y/N. They used him like a disposable tool, and when he was gone, they erased him from our lives."
Y/N felt sick to her stomach. She stumbled back, gripping the edge of the table to steady herself. All this time, she'd had a brother—a brother who had died because of the same people she had been trying to trust.
"And that's why you did this?" Y/N asked, her voice shaking with a mix of disbelief and rage. "You created this virus to get revenge?"
Jeon Dae-hyun's expression hardened. "It wasn't just about revenge. It was about control. The government thought they could control us, but I was going to turn the tables. I created the virus to give us power. With the controller device, we can manipulate the infected—turn them into an army. No more government control. We could rebuild the world, Y/N. We could be the ones in charge."
Y/N's hands trembled, her mind spinning with everything she had just learned. Her father hadn't just lost his son—he had lost his humanity in the process. His desire for revenge had turned into something twisted and monstrous, and now the fate of the world hung in the balance.
"And you expect me to help you?" Y/N asked, her voice breaking. "You expect me to just go along with this?"
Jeon Dae-hyun's eyes softened slightly, but the resolve in them remained. "I want you to understand, Y/N. I did this for our family. For you."
Y/N shook her head, tears brimming in her eyes. "This isn't for me, Dad. This is about you. And I'm not going to let you destroy everything just to get revenge."
Her father's face fell, and for the first time, Y/N saw the fear behind his cold exterior. But it didn't matter anymore. She had made her decision.
This had to end.
