Murder mystery - guess who.
When the lights first dim, blacking out the room and enshrouding them all in fear, Vik yells out to reprimand Ethan, the person nearest the light switch.
"Quit playing around, Ethan." He tells him, huffing an exasperated breath. Despite standing still, he lets his arms come up, holding them out sideways in order to improve his balance. "That's not funny."
"Mate I didn't even do anything-" He can't see a thing, not even the tips of his own fingertips, and yet Vik still looks to the others, worried, at the horrific gurgling sound that interrupts Ethan. It sounds like the man is choking, somehow, like on a liquid.
"Ethan, mate, you alright?" Simon asks, reaching out for his friend. He's the closest to Ethan currently, or at least he was before the lights suddenly shut off. Simon's hand merely brushes a section of cloth, likely the material of Ethan's hoodie. Then an echoing thud rings out through the room, like the sound a weightless body makes when it hits the ground.
The light flickers back on.
Ethan is lying on the ground, surrounded by what appears to be a pool of his own blood. Dark, crimson liquid drips from their friend's mouth, staining his teeth and crawling across the floor towards them.
Chaos erupts as soon as all of their eyes land on the terrible sight. Vik can't hear anything but the agonised screams of his other friends, the combination of voices so aggressive he feels like it blinds him for a moment as well.
Vik may freeze in place, but Harry's body clearly doesn't. "What the fuck! Ethan, holy shit, Ethan!" The youngest member rushes forward immediately, dropping to his knees right beside his friend, uncaring of the way his bare knees land right in the puddle of darkening blood. His hands rush out to grip at the other's dirtied hoodie, tightly clutching two fistfuls of the fabric like his life depends on it. (Considering the current situation... it genuinely might.) He kneels there, blubbering hysterics until Tobi makes the decision to go over and collect him.
"Come away, Harry, don't sit too close," Tobi orders him, likely trying for his regular sense of wise, well-meaning authority. The shaky wetness to his voice unfortunately disrupts that façade, however, as does the tremble in his hands as he reaches out to grab Harry by his biceps. "Harry, come on, please. We need to move away."
"B-but Ethan-"
"I know, Bog, I know," Tobi attempts to soothe, the tears stuttering down his face matching the presence of the ones in Harry's voice. "But we can't be right next to his body right now."
The dreadful thing about the interaction, disregarding the unmoving body of their friend, is that only one of the two kneeling men has noticed the way the incessant twitches of Ethan's body have already ceased. His eyes are wide and glassy, thoughtless and lifeless.
"Close his eyes, Tobi," Simon advises, his face pulled tight in a grimace as he simultaneously tries to look away and keep looking. "Don't leave them open."
"Why would we close-" Harry begins, his wide, innocent eyes full of frightened pain. "We need to get him help!"
"Harry," Josh says, and it's the no-nonsense, familiar voice filled with dread that brings him down from his panic. Though just a minute amount. "Harry, he's not breathing any more. I don't know if you noticed, but there is a rod coming out the back of his skull."
"There's what-" Harry inhales an extended, suffering breath, leaning around Tobi to peer down at Ethan's head. "Oh my God! There's a fucking rod in his skull!"
