Jack's POV

I didn't care that she was human. She was right. My bite would have turned her. The goddess lets us have a mate and lets us turn them. She would have fit in perfectly with my family. A beta. A human that tested as a beta without having been changed first. I can't believe that they made her test for status without changing her. Not that they could have changed her. Erik had looked into it and hadn't found any records of humans in pack without a mate. She linked, it was the main reason that we thought she was a wolf. She was completely human. No abused wolf hiding inside her, just a human.

My beast seriously didn't care and kept up a steady need for his mate. His mate, but that lying little shit wasn't mine. I had no intention to mate and mark a woman that lied to me for so long. Mates were meant to be together but it was still a choice. How the goddess thought I suited this manipulative little female was beyond me. I had given my everything to protect her. To care for her. To be there for her while she worked ridiculous hours. While she kept meeting bloodsuckers. While I thought my love might bring her back her wolf.

Remarkably Erik was the one that made us stay when Xavier and the rest of the pack left, he had insisted that my mate shouldn't be made to move immediately. He made us stay when we found out the truth. After a huge argument I found out that he had suspected something, not that she was human but that there was a reason why they were so overprotective of the little female. And when the truth was finally given, he argued that I had to talk to her instead of just leaving. We waited for her to be called in to the systems room again.

He stayed away, until I yelled at her. She hadn't said a single thing when I stopped her. So much like the first time I had seen her in the garden, going home with her brother. If only she had given me a reason why she never told me but she hadn't, not once had she even hinted at the truth. Like it didn't matter that she wasn't a Lycan. Like it didn't matter that they had all lied about her having been abused to the point of losing her wolf.

Erik had come to make sure I wouldn't attack her brother. He knew I couldn't hurt her, my beast wouldn't let me. I struggled against my own beast, his thoughts and desires. I had to do what was best for us, to protect us. While my beast just wanted his mate. Mark her with his teeth and scent mark every inch of her body, taste her and take her in every way that I had imagined. He wanted to give her a wolf and keep her close forever.

'You've already made up your mind. Ironically, if I really was your true mate, you would have been the only one that could have given me a wolf. But you've taken every bit of information you had and made a picture of me.' If she really was my true mate, she said it like I wouldn't know my mate, one I had saved myself for.

'It doesn't matter that it isn't right.' How dare she say I was wrong, she lied for weeks.

'You said it yourself I'm human, you would never have been able to love me enough to help me find the wolf you thought I lost.' I did. I did say that. But she didn't have the right to throw that back at me. This wasn't about the wolf she could have had, it was about the fact that she lied to me about ever having had one.

'There is nothing else left, Jack.' Her voice didn't break, face was void of any emotions and every word just shattered me further.

Then her fucking brother had the nerve to speak to me while he placed himself in a protective position against me. 'She never lied. We never lied. We protected her and we will continue to do so because it doesn't matter what species she was born as. She is my sister. Our family and our pack will always love her for who she is.' Well, good for them. They had been part of her lie, her alpha had lied to a room full of top wolves, even going as far as letting us believe she was a man. Sure, it was strange for a human to be part of a pack without a mate but they probably made her a part of the pack. Probably because she hacked them or something.
