Part 9

Prompt:
Amelia recognizes Vivi, for Amelia is the girl who Julian asked out after Vivi turned down his request for a date (Vivi was unable to accept his invitation at the time because of another commitment to another, one that happened to be full of infidelity and deceit on her partner's end- another thing that adds to her turmoil). Amelia and Julian ended up marrying after dating for a few years and settling down together. But while they were dating and still living in their college town, there were many nights when Julian encountered Vivi either at school or a public place like a bar, and their connection was the same ie repeated, deep eye contact and smiles, as well as some light conversation. Amelia was around often when this happened. Vivi was always too nervous to talk to Julian; he made her incredibly nervous. Even after turning him down, Julian still had a fondness for Vivi that he could not hide. Do you think it would be plausible that his sense of rejection played into his pursuit of Amelia? And his unwavering commitment to her? Would it be likely that he had some feelings of anger toward Vivi that she rejected him (she is extremely regretful of that, but he does not know it, for they haven't seen each other in 15 years). I have not decided yet if Amelia actually knows that Julian once actively pursued Vivi by asking her out. I don't think I will have Amelia's pov in this (although you never know) but what would her thoughts be both in witnessing this connection between Julian in Vivi during their college days and now again, 15 years later? To add complexity to the story, the reason Julian's group is at the bar is for Amelia's birthday.

Response:
It's definitely plausible that Julian's feelings of rejection from Vivi might have influenced his pursuit and commitment to Amelia. In such cases, people sometimes pursue relationships that feel safer or more attainable after being let down by someone they desired deeply. Julian could have felt some unresolved feelings toward Vivi—perhaps a mix of fondness and frustration—especially if he sensed that she was interested but didn't act on it. His dedication to Amelia might stem from wanting stability or a sense of closure after the disappointment with Vivi.

As for Amelia, if she didn't know that Julian once pursued Vivi but witnessed their subtle exchanges, she might have felt uneasy or suspicious, especially given the recurring tension. Her jealousy could have been simmering under the surface for years, and now, seeing that old connection reignite, especially on her birthday, might stir up deeper insecurities or resentment. If she had noticed it before but Julian had reassured her or never mentioned it, this moment could confirm her worst fears—that some part of him never fully let go of Vivi.

Her thoughts now might circle around anger, confusion, and a sense of betrayal. Even if she loves Julian, seeing that connection again—something she might not have had with him in the same way—could heighten her
