Chapter 3: Settling in Mumbai
The sound of car horns and the buzz of city life greeted Aarya as she stepped out of the taxi, standing in front of her new apartment building in Mumbai. Her father had already arranged the place for her—a cozy one-bedroom flat in a quiet, middle-class neighborhood. It was her first time living alone, and excitement mingled with nerves.
As she climbed the stairs to her third-floor apartment, dragging her suitcase behind her, she fumbled for the keys, dropped them, and bent down to pick them up. In true Aarya fashion, she tripped over her own feet, narrowly missing the door. She laughed at herself, shaking her head.
"Careful, beta," came a warm voice from behind.
Aarya turned around to see a middle-aged woman standing in the hallway, holding a pot of freshly cooked food. She smiled kindly at Aarya. "You must be new here. I’m Sunita Aunty. I live next door."
Aarya smiled back. "Yes, just moved in. I’m Aarya."
"Welcome, Aarya!" Sunita Aunty said. "If you ever need anything, just knock. My grandson, Aman, is here for the holidays. He’s always running around and causing mischief, so you’ll see him a lot."
Just as she said this, a boy about 13 years old, with a mischievous grin, appeared in the doorway. He looked at Aarya curiously. "Hi! Are you the new neighbor? Do you play video games?"
Aarya chuckled. "Not much of a gamer, but I could give it a try. What’s your name?"
"I’m Aman," he said proudly. "I can show you how to win at all the games!"
Aarya laughed, feeling her nerves ease up. "Deal. But I think I’ll be too busy tripping over things for a while."
Sunita Aunty chuckled softly. "You’ll get used to it, dear. By the way, if you’re free later, come over for chai. We’ll be happy to have you."
Aarya thanked her and watched as they left, smiling at the warmth her neighbors had already shown. As she stepped inside her apartment, it felt a little bare but cozy enough to make it her own.
She unpacked slowly, putting things in place, but her clumsiness showed up again when she bumped into the coffee table, knocking over a cup of water she’d just poured. She sighed, shaking her head. "Well, that’s typical," she muttered, grabbing a cloth to clean up the mess.
Later that evening, while she was adjusting the curtains,
she heard a knock at the door. It was Sunita Aunty again, this time with a couple in tow.
"This is Mr. and Mrs. Deshmukh," she introduced. "They live in the building, too."
The couple, in their late thirties, smiled warmly. "Welcome to the building!" Mr. Deshmukh said. "Mumbai can be overwhelming at first, but you’ll get the hang of it."
Aarya thanked them, feeling the sense of community growing. She spent a few minutes chatting with them about the neighborhood, the best grocery stores nearby, and the struggles of adjusting to the fast-paced life in Mumbai.
As night fell, Aarya sat by her window, looking out at the city lights twinkling in the distance. It felt strange being away from home, from her parents and Naina, but there was a sense of adventure in the air. Tomorrow, she would start her search for a job and begin her new life.
“I can do this,” she whispered to herself, feeling a surge of determination.
