Slashing the creature's head in two was the last thing it saw before collapsing. The monster was finally dead, and in less than a minute, the fight was over- thanks to the blade of Ether.
Just as we caught our breath, a sudden scream echoed through the clearing.
"WHERE IS IT!?" Eliot's panicked voice broke the silence, and we turned to see him running toward us, frantic.
Athea quickly approached, concerned. "What's happening, Eliot?"
"The... the... blade is... GONE!" he stammered, eyes wide with disbelief.
All around us, the toad villagers were in a state of chaos. Their eyes darted in every direction, scouring the ground, the trees, anywhere the legendary sword might be. It was as if a piece of their history had vanished into thin air, leaving them lost and scared. I felt a knot form in my stomach. There I stood, the blade still in my hands, a relic of their legend now in my grasp. What was I supposed to do? Give it back? Hide it?
Before I could think any further, Frye leaned in and whispered in my ear, her voice low but amused. "You know you're the one holding it, right?"
I nodded, feeling heat rush to my face. I hadn't even realized I was gripping the sword so tightly. Athea must have noticed too because they gave me a reassuring tap on the shoulder, their eyes shifting toward the portal that had just opened. Its glow was now a calm, inviting blue, signaling our way out.
The three of us exchanged a quick glance, a silent agreement passing between us. Without another word, we turned and ran toward the portal, the blade of Ether still clutched in my hands. Whatever it meant to this world, it was now part of our journey.
