Jeff woke up early the next morning, the soft light of dawn filtering through the curtains. His head was pounding slightly from the night before, but that wasn’t what held his attention. Bible was still asleep beside him, breathing deeply, looking peaceful under the blanket. Jeff stared at him for a moment, the events of the night playing back in his mind.
It was strange how easily it had all happened, how natural it felt. But Jeff wasn’t here to stay. He had responsibilities, and today was important. Izzy would be home soon, and he had to be there for her.
Carefully, Jeff slipped out of bed, moving quietly so as not to wake Bible. For a second, he hesitated, looking at him one last time. There was something about Bible that made him feel...something he couldn’t quite place. Leaning down, Jeff gently pressed a soft kiss to Bible’s forehead, a small gesture of gratitude, maybe even affection, though he wasn’t sure.
With that, he gathered his clothes, got dressed, and left the room, the door clicking softly behind him.
Once home, Jeff felt the weight of the day settle in. Today was the day Izzy would be back, and he wanted everything to be perfect for her. He went straight to the kitchen, planning to make her favorite meal. Cooking always helped him clear his mind, and today he needed it more than ever.
As he chopped vegetables and stirred the pot, he found himself distracted by thoughts of the interview he had scheduled. The last company had been draining, and he was eager for a new start. But first, he needed to focus on Izzy.
The hours passed quickly, and before he knew it, the afternoon had arrived. He heard a car pull up outside and wiped his hands on a towel, heart skipping a beat. He opened the door, expecting to see Megan with Izzy. But when he stepped outside, his eyes caught on something—or rather, someone—unexpected.
Megan was there, holding Izzy’s hand. But beside her was a man. A man holding Izzy in his arms, his eyes matching hers almost perfectly. Jeff froze, the smile he had prepared slipping from his face as he took in the sight.
Who was this guy? And why was he here with Megan and Izzy?
Jeff forced himself to keep his expression neutral for Izzy’s sake, though something inside him tightened uncomfortably. The man smiled, but Jeff’s eyes narrowed, his gut instinct telling him that he didn’t like this—not one bit.
Jeff stood outside the glass doors of the towering office building, clutching the strap of his briefcase. He took a deep breath, trying to calm the nerves that danced in his stomach. It had been a rough few days, and this job interview felt like a lifeline. He needed this, not just for himself but for Izy.
The morning had been a blur—waking up early, making Izy’s favorite breakfast, and dropping her off at daycare. Now, it was time to focus on the next chapter of his career. He checked his phone one last time, the text from Izy’s mom confirming she’d pick her up later. He couldn’t let his mind wander too much. He had to nail this interview.
“Mr. Jeff?” The receptionist’s voice broke through his thoughts. “They’re ready for you.”
With a nod, he straightened his suit and followed her down the hall. His heart pounded as she led him to a large boardroom with tall windows overlooking the city. The door swung open, and Jeff stepped inside.
The room was quiet, save for the shuffling of papers and the faint hum of the air conditioning. A long, sleek table dominated the space, with several people seated at the other end. They were all executives, dressed sharply, their faces calm but focused.
Jeff offered a polite smile, but when his eyes settled on the man sitting in the center of the panel, his world tilted.
Bible.
