Chapter 7 - Mel
After that day, we owed Nat one. She did what no one could do before her. She calmed Nick down quicker than any of us. And cheered him up at the same time.
But, the boys still went ahead with their idea. Mike was next, but she was a bit stressed out, so she said no; like at lunch. She put her roller skates on by the steps, near the gate.
I was on my way to meet the boys a bit further off, but then I saw her sitting there, lacing her skates up. I sat down next to her with a hey.
"Hi." she said cautiously.
"Thanks for what you did with Nick." I said. She sighed and looked at me.
"How do you do it? I can't even look at any of them now." she said as she scanned my face for any reactions.
"It's normal. Don't you have a brother?"
"I do. He's at a boarding school." she half-smiled.
"Well, they're like that to me. They're like my brothers. And don't think it's embarassing. I still don't know how you calmed him down with just that." I said, meaning the kiss.
"You don't want to know." she said quietly, but I heard her. I felt that it was making her uncomfortable, so I changed the subject.
"So. D'you like any of the boys?" I said, getting really girly as she continued with her laces. I saw her blush, so I stuck to it. "It's okay if you do. I mean, you're only human." I continued. She finished her laces and turned to me.
"Why are you having this discussion with me?"
"You helped. And, I thought about what you said at the park. We could have accepted you. You just didn't give us a chance." I smiled. She looked at me for a bit and then got up with her bag.
"Well, thanks. It's good to know. Say bye to the boys for me." she smiled jokingly as I got up and she went down the street, and I went the other way.
We saw her arrive to school the next day. It was Harry's turn. He went up to her, but she told him to wait and he followed her to our bench looking really confused.
"Okay. This is mental. You guys can't torture this lot." she said and turned to Harry. "Look. I'm sorry but no." she said
and went into the building. When she disappeared, the boys started talking again.
"We have to space it out. Spencer, you'll try tomorrow. I'll do it next week, Sam, the Friday of that week and after that
Matt. You'll do it the week after that." Jamie gave out the instructions. The boys nodded and we went inside in time for the bell to ring.
We went through the day without any troubles. It was quite boring actually. Nothing happened, apart from the
usual stuff...
The real real shock was when it was Jamie's turn. She didn't say no, like with everyone else up until that day. She did say no, that's not my point, but she was much more shocked. Okay, so Jamie didn't do it like the others... For one, he went into the florist on our way to school.
"Hey, could I have a single rose, please." he asked the girl behind the counter. Sam and Matt looked at each other, and the rest of the boys snickered. The girl got him a single red rose and he payed.
When we got outside, we laughed and he just looked at us. "She's a girl. Duh!" he said as he started walking.
"You know, I kind of hoped she was..." I said to him, which made the rest of them laugh even louder. When we got to school, Nat went past us and stopped at the bench. She waited for us to arrive and Jamie stepped up.
"Hey Nat. How are you doing?" he asked politely. Nat looked at me over his shoulder and saw me trying to hold back my laugh.
She smiled and looked at Jamie again.
"Fine thanks." she replied.
"I have a question and a surprise for you." he said, still polite. This time, I could see her trying to hold back a laugh
too. He handed her the rose and she took it. "Would you like to go out with me?" he said. She looked down to hide her
laughter and when she looked up, she was still smiling.
"Gosh, that's really sweet." she reassured him. "But I'm afraid no. On the other hand, I do know someone who might want to." she pointed to a girl to her left and he turned to see a ginger girl pulling her eyes away from them.
When she realised he saw her, she blushed and looked at him. I thought it was sweet and Nat and I shared a look.
She jumped off the table and went
to her. "Here, you deserve this more than I do." she handed the girl the rose. She took it with an amazed look and Nat smiled at her as she turned to go in.
The ginger girl looked at Jamie, still red and he stepped closer. They talked for a while as we sat at the bench.
Sam asked her on the Friday of that week. Again, he was unsuccessful. So, Matt was the last one. This was going to be interesting. I realised Nat's small crush on him in primary at the basketball game, but I didn't think much of it. But the day before he was going to ask her, I saw that it had developed, probably with the incident with Nick when he helped him. Nick I mean. She said no, but I saw her hesitate more too...
