Chapter 22 - Mel
About a week later, Nick came up with an idea to spend Halloween.
"Guys, there's a meteor shower due on Halloween, who wants to see it?" he threw his bag down on the bench and we looked up at him. We looked at him speechlessly for a minute, and then shrugged.
"I'll go." Nat said with Matt. The rest of us nodded.
"Okay, so let's meet up at my house." Nick said. He lived on top of the hill that was opposite to our school. He was the richest in our group. "How about sunset, in costumes?" he asked. We nodded with a smile. We let the boys go in, before Matt, Sam and Nat pulled me back.
"We need to prank them." Nat said quietly with a shine in her eyes. I nodded with a laugh as we started to plan.
"Hey, I know. Sam, Mel, dress up as skeletons." Matt said. We nodded with my boyfriend and Nat spoke up.
"I'm coming as a mad scientist." she smiled.
"I'm coming as a werewolf. You two might want to go to Nat's. Her mum has a lot of white glowing bones that we could make a costume from." he said.
"My mum can get us a pair of costumes. We should use them in the prank instead." I said.
"Good idea. I can do a wicked wolf howl." Nat winked at Matt. They smiled as we laughed.
"You can get Dylan, you know how good he is with special effects." Sam said as we grabbed our stuff and started walking into the building.
The last time we saw Nat's Londoner friend, was at Matt's birthday. He made epic special effects with some glow sticks and balloons. He was our special effect go-to guy on any occasion. He even helped with Ben and Rachel's wedding. He was only there for the ceremony because he had to get an earlier train back with his mum.
Nat and him were really close, but he was happy for her and Matt. It was obvious that there was no love triangle there. It was a huge relief. For everyone.
"Yeah, I might as well." Nat said as we walked into form. Our teacher nodded as the bell hasn't gone yet and we sat in our places.
Before the bell, Jade stuck her head in and looked at Nat. My friend walked up to her and gave her something. They shook hands and Jade went to form.
Nat sat down and she shrugged at us, but whispered something to Matt, who nodded with a small smile. I didn't mind, and by the looks of it, neither did Sam. We got used to their inside jokes by now.
We planned the pranks whenever we had a spare minute without the other boys. It was actually fun. Nat set the plan in motion while we were walking home, by which time we all knew what we had to do.
"Nick." Nat said as she skated backwards, in front of us so she could see our faces.
"Yes?" he asked.
"I was wondering. I know this great clearing on the top of the hill. Where you live. It's right in the middle of the forest that's around the town. How about we meet up at yours, and then go up there? I know a good way that'll get us there and I can guarantee there won't be anyone there, but us." she said with a small smile. We looked at each other, as if we didn't know how she got the idea, and nodded.
"Okay then. Come in costumes though and we can take food and drink and blankets." Nick said. We nodded and continued talking, or skating in Nat's case.
When Sam and I split from the group to go down one more street together, they waved to us.
"Do you want to come round and get the costumes?" I asked Sam as he put a hand around my waist. He nodded with a cheeky smile as he looked at me.
"Sure." he said and kissed me. I got used to it now, and we walked to my house.
"Mum, I'm home!" I said as I shut the door and Evie appeared at the bottom of the stairs.
"You better not start snogging on the sofa again. Alex is home." she said meaning my brother. My big, overprotective brother.
Evie is only 13, and a total goth. She goes to an all girl school. She never washes off her black nail polish, and
puts the black eye-shadow on whenever she can. She only doesn't wear black when she goes to school. They have white blouses there.
Alex, my brother, is a total player. But he's still over protective of his little sisters. He's at college, but lives at home with us. He's okay with Sam, but we can't do anything, kissing wise, when he's around. What he doesn't know can't hurt him. But I still love my siblings, and I know they love me too.
I nodded in thanks to Evie and walked into the living room as we took our shoes off.
"Hey sis." Alex said as he turned around from the washing up.
"Hey Alex." I said to him and Sam waved from behind me as I looked around.
"Where's Mum?" I asked him. He nodded to the study as I nodded in thanks and went in.
My mum and dad were looking at something on the computer when I got in. They clicked it off as I kissed them on the cheek.
"Hey darling, how was school?" dad asked.
"It was fine." I said to him and then turned to my mum. "Mum, could you help me and Sam please? We're pranking the boys on Halloween with Matt and Nat." I asked and my parents smiled in a nostalgic way. She nodded and we went to the computer in my room.
"Do you need costumes?" she asked.
"Yep. We're going as a pair of skeletons." I said as I clicked on the internet.
"Oh, this one then." she clicked on one of the sites and pointed to a skeleton costume. It looked really realistic, especially in the dark and she bought it.
The phone rang and Alex shouted up the stairs as Sam stayed in my room with my mum.
I ran down the stairs as my brother grilled me about Matt.
"He's Nat's boyfriend, you idiot. Pass me the phone." I said to him, but he just stopped me and put the phone to his ear.
"What do you want from my sister?" he asked. Embarrasing or what? I heard Nat's voice from the phone.
"It's Nat as in Natalie, Alex. I need to talk to Mel about the prank." she laughed. Alex passed me the phone.
"Thank you." I said to him dramatically. He ruffled my hair and I slapped his hand away.
"Hey Mel, Sam's around, right?" she asked.
"Uhum." I nodded.
"Great. Dylan can make it. He promised to make the UFO and get the fireworks." I heard the smile in her voice. I laughed.
"Good, we've got our costumes." I said and we planned as I put her on loudspeaker, and so did she. We planned as a four, and as Rachel and Ben were around hers with Matt, they gave us tips.
By the time we corrected everything, it was late and everyone needed to go home, so we said bye and made plans to talk tomorrow. Sam went home after giving me a kiss on the cheek and a wave. Alex watched us with his hawk like eyes as I watched Sam run home in the rain.
Of course, Alex grilled me about the prank and the plan. I answered the best I could until I could go to sleep. It was a peaceful night.
