The fluorescent lights buzzed softly in the hospital waiting room, casting a cold glow over the four slumped in the plastic chairs.

JJ sat forward, elbows on his knees, bouncing one leg anxiously. His knuckles were raw from earlier, probably from punching the nearest hard surface when they wheeled John B past him.

Next to him, Kiara was glaring daggers at Adeline, her arms crossed so tight it looked like she was holding herself back from lunging.

Pope sat between them, trying to ignore the tension radiating from Kiara like a live wire, while Addie, sitting as far from Kiara as possible, tapped her foot against the floor.

The whole night had been chaos. John B had been pushed from the Hawks Nest, and for a terrifying few minutes, they all thought they'd lost him. But he was alive—barely—resting in his hospital room with Sarah by his side.

And that's when Adeline made the mistake of speaking.

"We should go home," she said softly, looking up from her phone. "It's late. We're not helping anyone just sitting here."

Kiara scoffed, a sharp, humorless laugh that made JJ glance at her, bracing himself for impact.

"Of course you wanna leave," Kiara snapped, shifting in her seat to face Adeline fully. "Your sister's in there, playing nurse, making herself look like some saint, and now you wanna dip? Classic Cameron move."

Adeline stiffened, her fingers curling around the edge of her chair. "What the hell is that supposed to mean?"

JJ rubbed his face, muttering under his breath, "Here we go."

Pope sat up straighter, ready to step in if this got worse. "Kiara, come on—"

"No, I wanna know," Addie cut in, her voice rising. "Because last time I checked, I've been here all night, same as you."

Kiara's jaw clenched. "Yeah? And yet, you didn't do a damn thing when your sisters physcopath boyfriend tried to kill John B."

Adeline shot up from her chair. "Me and Sarah did everything we could, this isn't our fault!"

"Oh, sorry, am I being mean to you?" Kiara stood too, squaring up like she was ready to throw hands. "Are you feeling targeted, Adeline? Welcome to our world. You kooks have been screwing us over since day one."

Adeline's face twisted with anger, but there was something else there too—guilt, maybe. "You think I don't know that? You think I don't hate what the kooks do?"

Kie stepped closer. "Yeah? Then prove it."

Pope quickly put a hand on Kiara's shoulder, pulling her back. "Kie, not here."

JJ finally spoke, voice sharp. "Kie, sit down."

Kiara's nostrils flared, but she yanked herself away from Pope's grip and dropped back into her seat, glaring at Adeline.

Adeline stayed standing for a second, breathing hard, before looking away and sinking down as well.

Silence stretched between them, heavy and suffocating.

JJ ran a hand through his hair and exhaled. "We're not leaving until we know he's okay. So everyone just... shut up."

No one argued.

Pope stared at the floor, Adeline crossed her arms, and Kiara glowered at the clock on the wall like it had personally offended her.

The only sound was the distant beeping of machines and the occasional muffled footsteps of a passing nurse.
