Siya's POV:
It was late, and we were both sprawled out on the couch, our feet propped up, both quiet, both lost in thought. The glow from the city outside cast a warm light over the luxurious Airbnb, but as stunning as the place was, it only made me feel more out of place. There was something missing. Something… familiar.
Suddenly, Ehaan broke the silence with a low groan, clutching his stomach.
“Please don’t tell me you’re hungry,” I teased, laughing softly, but deep down, I was just as restless. “You just had gelato.”
“It’s not just hunger,” he muttered, glancing at me with a frown. “It’s… I don’t know. You know that feeling where you miss something, but you can’t quite put a name to it?”
“Yeah, like home food.” I sighed, sinking back. “All the fancy stuff we’ve been eating… it’s just not the same, right?”
He gave me a surprised look, his usual mask of indifference slipping for a moment. “Exactly.”
“Okay,” I said, standing up abruptly, a sudden surge of inspiration hitting me. “Why don’t I cook something? Something simple, like daal and rice? It’s not much, but it might help.”
He raised an eyebrow, clearly caught off guard. “You cook?”
“Don’t act so surprised,” I scoffed, rolling my eyes. “Yes, I cook. Just… don’t expect it to be anything five-star.”
To my surprise, Ehaan stood up, following me into the kitchen. Usually, he would have just shrugged, letting me handle it, but this time, he actually seemed interested.
“You don’t have to,” I said, giving him a curious look.
“I want to,” he replied, his voice softer than usual. “Maybe I could use the distraction.”
There was something different about him tonight, something almost gentle. It was like he’d let his guard down without even realizing it. I felt like I was seeing a glimpse of the real him—the person he hid beneath that cold, indifferent exterior. I bit back a smile, feeling a little warmer inside.
As I started to gather the ingredients, Ehaan took a knife and began chopping the vegetables with surprising skill. “You’re not bad at this,” I said, watching him with a hint of admiration.
He looked up, a faint smirk on his lips. “Well, I’m not just a spoiled brat"
I laughed softly, stirring the daal on the stove. “Right. I’ll believe it when I see it.”
We worked in sync, moving around the kitchen, exchanging glances, and laughing at small mistakes like when he put way too much salt in the daal and then pretended he’d meant to do it. It was comfortable. Natural. I couldn’t remember the last time I’d felt this… at ease.
As we waited for the food to cook, he leaned back against the counter, watching me with an intensity that made me self-conscious. “Why are you staring at me?” I asked, raising an eyebrow.
“Because you’re… surprising,” he said simply, his gaze unbreaking. “Not many people would have been this patient with me.”
“You know,” I started, trying to ignore the flutter in my stomach. “I don’t think the real you is as intimidating as you act. It’s almost like… the beast is just a mask.”
The words slipped out before I could stop them, and his eyes flickered with something dark and amused. “Beast, huh?”
I opened my mouth to explain, to backtrack, but he stepped forward, closing the distance between us until I could feel the warmth radiating from him.
“Is that what you see when you look at me?” he murmured, his voice low, teasing.
My breath caught, and I felt my cheeks heating up. “I-I didn’t mean it like that.”
“Didn’t you?” he smirked, his fingers brushing a loose strand of hair behind my ear, lingering just a moment longer than necessary. His gaze held mine, intense and unreadable, sending a shiver down my spine.
There was a part of me that wanted to step back, to regain the distance, but there was something even stronger that wanted to stay right there, inches from him, my heart racing, feeling that dark, magnetic pull.
“Maybe,” I whispered, unable to tear my gaze away from his. “Maybe the ‘beast’ is just… misunderstood.”
He laughed softly, the sound warm and surprisingly gentle. “Maybe. Or maybe you’re just a terrible judge of character.”
“Or maybe you’re just not as scary as you want everyone to think.”
His smirk faded, and for a brief moment, he looked almost vulnerable. “Maybe,” he said quietly, his gaze softening.
The timer beeped, breaking the spell between us. I turned quickly, flustered, trying to shake off the strange warmth that had filled me.
But as we sat down to eat, I couldn’t help but think about that moment.
