Chapter 3: Woundwort's Ambition
Back at Efrafa, tension hung heavy as Woundwort gathered his officers, a fierce resolve evident in his gaze. His ambition had grown beyond leading Efrafa; he envisioned extending his influence far beyond its borders, even reaching into London itself.
Hyzenthlay, a voice of caution among his officers, stepped forward. "Woundwort, why set your sights on London? The risks are greater than ever, and there's no telling what dangers we'd face there."
Woundwort met her question with a rare openness, sharing a glimpse of his past that few knew. "You want to understand, Hyzenthlay? Then listen."
He began his story in a tone edged with memories of hardship. Woundwort had come from a peaceful warren, sheltered and safe. But when he was young, his family faced a devastating loss—first his father, and soon after his mother, leaving him alone.
One day, a professor discovered him and took him in. For a time, life in the professor's cottage offered safety, but it came with its own challenges, including a household cat. "I'll never forget how that cat toyed with me, reminding me of how vulnerable I was," Woundwort said, his tone calm but determined.
Eventually, Woundwort grew and found his strength. Seizing a chance, he returned to the wild, resolved to protect himself and any warren he joined from the vulnerability he once felt. When he encountered a warren with little structure, he challenged the Chief Rabbit and quickly gained respect as their new leader. From there, he committed himself to building Efrafa as a secure and disciplined community.
With time, he united several warrens under Efrafa's rule. "Every warren I brought into Efrafa strengthened us. Nutley Copse, and others like it, now thrive with our discipline and security." He looked at the gathered rabbits. "My vision isn't just about Efrafa; it's about creating a lasting, united warren, strong and self-sufficient."
His story left the officers deep in thought, and Hyzenthlay remained steady in her stance. "Woundwort, we already have strength and security here. Perhaps what we need is peace, not new territory."
But Woundwort's eyes were set. "We are safe, yes. But real strength means preparing for every possibility. I want Efrafa to grow, to ensure its strength and legacy. London could be our greatest opportunity yet."
