Chapter 19: The Hasty Retreat
As they navigated through the underbrush, Captain Holly urged the group to move faster. "We can't linger here! The longer we stay, the higher the chance the Efrafans will spot us!"
"Right," Hazel replied, his heart racing. "Let's keep going!"
With their hearts pounding, the group hurried deeper into the woods, trying to put as much distance as possible between themselves and the Efrafan soldiers. The sound of snapping twigs and rustling leaves echoed in the quiet, reminding them of the danger lurking nearby.
"We need to stick together," Bigwig called out, glancing back to ensure everyone was keeping pace. "If we get separated, we're done for."
Fiver, still shaken from his previous visions, lagged a bit behind. "I can feel it again," he murmured, a haunted look in his eyes. "Something's coming. We need to be careful."
Holly shot a concerned glance at Fiver. "What do you see, Fiver?"
"It's not clear," Fiver replied, his ears twitching nervously. "Just flashes of chaos and... and loss. We need to keep moving. There's no time to waste!"
"Then let's move it!" Dandelion urged, determination surging through him as they picked up speed.
As they rushed through the thicket, Hazel's mind raced with thoughts of their home at Watership Down and the safety it provided. He could not let the Efrafans take that away from them.
Suddenly, a faint sound pierced the air—a low rumble that made Hazel's fur stand on end. "What was that?" he whispered, halting in his tracks.
The group froze, straining to listen. Holly's ears perked up. "That doesn't sound good," he warned. "We need to hurry!"
Hazel nodded and signaled for the others to follow. They pressed on, weaving through the trees, but the ominous sound grew louder, reverberating through the forest like a warning bell.
"Do you think it's the Efrafans?" Bigwig asked, glancing back anxiously.
"Could be," Holly replied. "Or it might be something worse."
Suddenly, the ground shook beneath their paws, and they heard the unmistakable sounds of heavy machinery. "They're coming!" Hazel shouted, panic rising in his chest. "We have to find cover!"
With urgency fueling their movements, they sprinted towards a dense patch of undergrowth, ducking low as they hid behind a thick bramble. From their concealed position, they watched as a group of Efrafan soldiers emerged from the trees, marching in formation, their eyes scanning the area.
"Stay quiet!" Holly hissed, his voice barely above a whisper.
As the soldiers passed by, Hazel felt his heart thumping in his chest. He could see the grim determination in their faces, a reflection of the brutal strength that General Woundwort commanded.
"They're searching for us," Holly muttered, gritting his teeth. "If they find us, we won't stand a chance."
As the soldiers continued on their path, the rumbling grew louder, and the group exchanged nervous glances. "What's making that noise?" Primrose whispered, her voice trembling slightly.
"I don't know, but we can't stick around to find out," Hazel replied, trying to keep his voice steady. "We need to get back to Watership Down as quickly as possible."
Once the soldiers were out of sight, they cautiously emerged from their hiding place. The air felt thick with tension as they moved carefully, avoiding any unnecessary noise.
Holly took the lead again, guiding them through the tangled foliage. "We need to find a safe route back to the Down. I know a path that should keep us hidden from sight."
"Lead the way," Bigwig said, determination etched on his face. "We can't let them catch us. Not now."
As they pressed on, the sound of the machinery faded behind them, but the unsettling feeling in the pit of Hazel's stomach remained. They had narrowly escaped this time, but they all knew the danger wasn't over yet.
"Fiver, what do you see now?" Hazel asked, glancing back at his brother, who seemed to be lost in thought.
Fiver looked up, his eyes clouded with uncertainty. "It's still there... the storm is coming, Hazel. We have to be ready."
The group continued their trek through the woods, the sense of urgency growing with each step. They needed to reach Watership Down and prepare for the trials ahead. Hazel's mind raced with strategies, plans, and hopes, but deep down, he couldn't shake the feeling that something far worse than they anticipated was waiting for them.
