The next day, Tatsuya found himself grappling with an unexpected sense of anticipation. He had never been one to seek out excitement, but the thought of Mikano's secret passion for cosplay lingered in his mind like an enticing cliffhanger in a gripping manga. The revelation stirred something within him—a spark of curiosity about what lay beneath the surface of their seemingly ordinary lives.
As he sat in his usual spot at school, Tatsuya stared out the window, watching the cherry blossoms swirl in the spring breeze. Memories washed over him, reminding him of the pressures he faced growing up. His parents, both high-powered professionals, had always expected excellence. They had provided him with every luxury, but with it came the weight of their aspirations. Tatsuya had never felt like he measured up, lost in a sea of expectations that suffocated his own desires.
In contrast, Mikano seemed to glide through life effortlessly. He remembered how, during their first year, she had walked into class, radiating warmth and confidence. She had become the centre of attention, the girl everyone wanted to befriend. But beneath her popular façade, Tatsuya sensed an intensity that hinted at deeper dreams.
"You've got to step out of your comfort zone, Tatsuya," Kenji had told him once. "Life's too short to be a spectator."
Tatsuya had shrugged it off then, but now he felt the weight of those words. He wanted to explore new experiences, to break free from the self-imposed limits that had defined him for so long.
That afternoon, as Tatsuya returned to his apartment, he was surprised to find a soft knock on his door. He opened it cautiously, his heart racing at the unexpected guest.
Mikano stood there, beaming, her hair slightly tousled from the wind. "Hey, Tatsuya! I hope I'm not interrupting!"
"Uh, not at all," he stammered, stepping aside to let her in. He was taken aback; he had never shared his address with anyone at school. How had she found him?
"I was in the area and thought I'd drop by," she said, her eyes sparkling with enthusiasm. "Is that okay?"
"Sure, but... what's up?" Tatsuya asked, trying to mask his surprise with casualness.
"I need to change before the cosplay meetup later," she said, glancing around his apartment. "Do you mind if I use your room?"
Tatsuya's heart raced. The thought of Mikano in his space was exhilarating and terrifying at the same time. "Um, are you sure? I mean, it's a bit... personal," he replied, a hint of hesitation creeping into his voice.
Mikano laughed lightly, her demeanour so easy going it eased his anxiety. "Don't worry! I promise I won't mess anything up. I just need to get into character."
After a moment's deliberation, he nodded, unable to deny her infectious enthusiasm. "Alright, go ahead."
Mikano flashed him a grateful smile and headed toward his room, her footsteps echoing in the otherwise quiet apartment. Tatsuya felt a strange mix of excitement and nervousness as he waited, pacing the living room.
As he fidgeted with a manga volume on the coffee table, he couldn't help but wonder what Mikano was like when she let her guard down. She had always been the star, but in this moment, he would get to see the person behind the persona.
Moments later, he heard the soft rustle of fabric, and then she stepped back into view, and Tatsuya's breath caught in his throat. Mikano wore a stunning cosplay from her favourite anime, Code Nitro—a sleek, dark outfit adorned with intricate details and vibrant colours that perfectly captured the character's spirit. The ensemble was both fierce and graceful, highlighting her natural beauty.
"What do you think?" she asked, spinning around playfully.
Tatsuya blinked, momentarily speechless. "Wow, you look... amazing!" he managed to say, his heart racing.
