Mikasa stood in the kitchen, preparing a late-night snack. The smell of popcorn filled the air, mixing with the soft glow of the overhead lights. She had invited Aiko over for a casual movie night, hoping to clear the air after the earlier tension with Tatsuya and the unwelcome interruptions Aiko had been causing. As the popcorn popped, Mikasa glanced at her phone, wondering if Aiko was still on her way.
Moments later, the doorbell rang. Mikasa opened the door to find Aiko standing there with a bright smile and a small bag of candy.
"Hey! I brought snacks!" Aiko chirped, stepping inside.
Mikasa couldn't help but smile back. "Thanks! I made popcorn. Do you want to help me set up the movie?"
"Absolutely!" Aiko replied, her enthusiasm infectious as they moved to the living room.
As they arranged the couch pillows and settled in with their snacks, the atmosphere felt lighter. Aiko's laughter echoed through the room as they picked a movie, a classic rom-com that made them giggle at the silly antics on screen.
As the movie played, Mikasa stole glances at Aiko, noting how animated she was. Aiko's expressive nature drew Mikasa in, making her forget about the complicated feelings swirling around her. They shared a comfortable silence, punctuated by laughter and the occasional playful jab at the movie's characters.
Halfway through, Aiko turned to Mikasa, her expression serious. "Can I ask you something?"
"Of course," Mikasa replied, curiosity piqued.
"What do you think about relationships?" Aiko asked, her voice tentative. "Like, do you believe in love at first sight or do you think it's just a fantasy?"
Mikasa pondered the question, remembering her own feelings for Tatsuya. "I think it can be both. Sometimes you feel an instant connection with someone, but real love takes time and effort to grow."
Aiko nodded, her gaze thoughtful. "That makes sense. I've always believed in the possibility of love at first sight, but I guess it's the deeper connections that really matter."
"Exactly," Mikasa said, her heart racing a little at how personal the conversation was becoming.
After a few moments of silence, Aiko leaned in closer, her voice dropping to a whisper. "Do you think it's possible to develop feelings for someone you didn't expect?"
Mikasa felt a pang of recognition, aware of the way her own feelings for Tatsuya had surprised her. "Yeah, definitely. Sometimes you just click with someone, even if you didn't see it coming."
Aiko's gaze held Mikasa's, a flicker of vulnerability in her eyes. "What if that someone is...unexpectedly perfect?"
Mikasa's heart raced. She could sense the weight of Aiko's words. The air felt charged, and she couldn't help but wonder if Aiko was hinting at something more than friendship.
Just then, Aiko's phone buzzed, breaking the moment. She glanced at the screen, her expression shifting back to a lighter tone. "Oh! It's Tatsuya. He's checking in."
Mikasa felt a mix of relief and disappointment. "How's he doing?"
"He said he's working on some new designs and wanted to know if we're having fun. I told him we're just getting started!" Aiko replied, her cheerful demeanour returning.
Mikasa chuckled, appreciating Aiko's effort to keep things light. "Tell him we're just about to get to the good part of the movie."
As Aiko typed away on her phone, Mikasa's mind wandered. She couldn't shake the feeling that their connection was growing stronger. Aiko had become more than just a rival; she was someone Mikasa could confide in, someone who understood her on a different level.
