The atmosphere at school felt charged as the days passed since Mikano's conversation with Aiko. The notion of relationships was shifting, expanding beyond traditional boundaries. It was a topic that began to bubble up in various conversations, including the ones Mikano had with her friends and family.
One afternoon, Mikano sat in the library with Tatsuya, who was engrossed in a manga while she scrolled through her phone. She stumbled upon a post discussing LGBTQ+ representation in anime and cosplay, which sparked her curiosity.
"Hey, Tatsuya," she said, looking up. "What do you think about gender identity and orientation in cosplay? Like, how people express themselves through their characters?"
Tatsuya glanced up, surprised by the question. "I think it's awesome. Cosplay is all about self-expression, right? People should feel free to embody whoever they want, regardless of gender or orientation."
Mikano nodded, feeling a warmth at Tatsuya's open-mindedness. "Yeah, I agree. It's just... I've been thinking about Aiko and Mikasa. What if Aiko is more than just a friend to Mikasa? Like, what if she has feelings for her?"
Tatsuya raised an eyebrow, intrigued. "You think Aiko might be into girls?"
"Maybe," Mikano replied, biting her lip. "And it makes me wonder how we all navigate our identities, especially in a space like cosplay where it feels like anything goes."
Tatsuya smiled, leaning back in his chair. "It's important to create an environment where everyone feels accepted for who they are. I think that's one of the coolest parts of cosplay culture. It allows people to explore different aspects of themselves."
Mikano thought for a moment, her mind racing with the implications. "So, if Aiko likes Mikasa, that's totally valid, right? But it could complicate things, especially with how I feel about Aiko being around Tatsuya."
"True, but I think it's worth exploring," Tatsuya said, his expression serious. "If Aiko's feelings are genuine, it might lead to some interesting dynamics, but it doesn't mean you have to feel threatened. Your relationship with Mikasa and Aiko can evolve."
Just then, Mikasa joined them at the table, a stack of books in her arms. "What are you two talking about?" she asked, curiosity lighting her eyes.
"Just discussing cosplay and identity," Mikano said casually. "You know, how it allows people to express themselves."
Mikasa nodded, her expression thoughtful. "It really does. I've seen so many people feel more comfortable in their own skin because of it. Cosplay creates a safe space."
As they chatted, Mikano felt the weight of her thoughts lift slightly. Perhaps it was time to encourage Aiko to be open with Mikasa. If she truly had feelings for her sister, Mikasa deserved to know.
That evening, Mikano gathered her courage and invited Aiko to her house for a casual hangout. With Tatsuya by her side, she hoped to create an environment that would allow for honest conversation.
When Aiko arrived, she seemed her usual cheerful self, but there was an underlying nervousness in her demeanour. "Hey, thanks for having me over!" she exclaimed, bouncing on her heels.
Mikano led her to the living room, where Tatsuya was already setting up some games. "We thought we'd have a chill night. Just some snacks and fun!"
As the evening progressed, Mikano noticed Aiko stealing glances at Mikasa, who was in the kitchen preparing popcorn. Aiko's cheeks flushed every time their eyes met, and Mikano felt a mix of empathy and encouragement.
"Hey, Aiko," Mikano said during a lull in the conversation, trying to keep her tone light. "Can I ask you something?"
"Sure!" Aiko replied, her enthusiasm unwavering.
Mikano took a deep breath. "How do you feel about Mikasa? I mean, as a person."
Aiko hesitated, her gaze dropping to the floor. "She's amazing. I admire her talent and kindness... and I just love being around her."
Mikano leaned in, her heart racing. "Do you think those feelings could be more than just friendship?"
Aiko's eyes widened, and she looked genuinely startled. "I... I don't know. I haven't really thought about it. But maybe? I just really like her."
Mikano felt a rush of hope. "Then you should tell her! It's important to be honest about your feelings, especially if you care about her."
Aiko nodded slowly, the determination in her eyes returning. "You're right. I'll talk to her."
As the night wore on, the atmosphere shifted from casual to intimate, with laughter and playful teasing echoing through the living room. Mikano noticed the way Aiko and Mikasa interacted—there was a spark, a connection that was undeniable.
Later, when Mikano and Tatsuya were alone, she couldn't help but express her thoughts. "Do you think Aiko and Mikasa will make a good couple?"
Tatsuya smiled, wrapping his arm around her shoulders. "If they're both open to it, why not? Love is love, after all."
Mikano leaned against him, her heart swelling with hope. "I think it could be really beautiful."
As they settled in for the evening, Mikano felt a renewed sense of understanding and acceptance—not just for Aiko and Mikasa, but for herself and her friends. In a world filled with complex identities, love had the power to bind them all together, no matter the form it took.
