The vibrant lights of the city twinkled like stars as I stepped out of the car, my heart racing with a mix of excitement and apprehension. Tonight was a girls' night out, a tradition among my friends and me, and I was determined to enjoy it—if only to take my mind off the whirlwind of emotions swirling within me.
Yoko had organized the outing, and the energy was infectious as we made our way to the club. The music thumped through the air, vibrating in my chest as we entered the bustling venue. It was packed, a sea of laughter and chatter, with couples and friends celebrating the night together.
"Orm! Over here!" Yoko called, waving from a corner booth. I spotted her and quickly made my way through the crowd, feeling the familiar sense of camaraderie that came with being surrounded by friends. Faye was already seated next to her, and Charlotte joined us moments later, her eyes sparkling with anticipation.
Once we settled into our seats, I leaned back against the plush cushions, letting the atmosphere wash over me. The waitstaff flitted by, delivering drinks and appetizers, and soon we were all sharing stories and laughing.
"So, how's life treating you, Orm?" Yoko asked, her voice cutting through the noise. "Still enjoying the single life?"
I forced a smile, shaking my head. "Yeah, I'm fine with it. Being single has its perks, you know?"
Yoko rolled her eyes playfully. "Come on, you can't seriously be happy without a girlfriend. It's way more fun to have someone to go out with."
"Maybe," I replied, taking a sip of my drink. "But I've got my studies and my friends. That's enough for me right now."
"Speaking of girlfriends," Faye chimed in, a teasing grin on her face, "Yoko and I have been talking about our future plans. What about you? Anyone caught your eye?"
I felt my cheeks heat slightly, but I quickly masked my surprise with indifference. "Not really. Just focusing on school."
The conversation flowed effortlessly, shifting from funny anecdotes to deeper discussions about love and relationships. Yoko and Faye gushed about their romance, while Charlotte shared stories of her crush on Engfa, the bartender at Faye's club. I couldn't help but feel a pang of envy mixed with a touch of longing as they spoke so passionately about their partners.
As they continued, my mind began to wander, drifting toward thoughts of Ling. I pictured her—sharp, intelligent, and annoyingly beautiful. The way she had looked at me during our tutoring sessions, her focus unwavering, had ignited something in me. Each time I replayed our interactions, I felt a spark of excitement that I couldn't shake off.
What would it be like to be with her? I imagined us walking side by side, sharing laughs, her sarcastic remarks countered by my teasing comebacks. I envisioned quiet moments, our eyes meeting across a table, the world fading away as we connected on a deeper level.
"Orm?" Yoko's voice brought me back to reality, her brow furrowed in concern. "Are you even listening?"
I blinked, shaking off the daydream. "Sorry, I was just... thinking."
"About what? Your future girlfriend?" Faye teased, wiggling her eyebrows.
"Please, I'm not in the market for a girlfriend," I replied, attempting to sound dismissive. "Just enjoying my time with you all."
They exchanged knowing glances, but I brushed it off, my heart racing as the images of Ling resurfaced. I didn't want to admit it, not even to myself, but I was drawn to her in a way I had never experienced before.
The night wore on, filled with laughter and good-natured teasing, but the more I interacted with my friends, the more aware I became of the emptiness that lingered in my heart. I loved spending time with them, yet a part of me felt incomplete. Was it really just the single life I was satisfied with, or was I yearning for something more?
Eventually, Yoko suggested we hit the dance floor, and the idea of losing myself in the music was tempting. As we moved to the rhythm, I tried to shake off my thoughts of Ling, immersing myself in the moment instead. The pulsating beats resonated through me, and for a brief moment, I lost myself in the joy of dancing.
But every twirl and spin only reminded me of how much I wished Ling could be here, dancing alongside me, sharing this exhilaration. In my mind, I could picture her with her arms raised, swaying to the music, a soft smile on her face as she glanced at me with those piercing eyes.
"Orm, are you okay?" Charlotte asked, breaking through my reverie as she spun me around to face her.
"Yeah, I'm fine," I said, forcing a grin. But my thoughts drifted back to Ling, wondering what she would think of this night out.
As the night wore on and we finally took a break, I couldn't shake the feeling of longing that tugged at my heart. I loved my friends, but something was missing—someone who could ignite a spark in me, who could challenge me and push me to be better.
By the time we left the club, I was exhausted but still buzzing with energy. We piled into Yoko's car, and as we drove through the illuminated streets, I stared out the window, lost in thought.
Ling was always on my mind, a constant presence I couldn't ignore. I wanted to see her again, to show her how much I had improved, and perhaps—just perhaps—to find out if there was more to our relationship than just tutor and student.
"Hey, Orm?" Yoko's voice broke through my thoughts once more. "You okay? You've been quiet all night."
I turned to her, forcing another smile. "Yeah, just thinking."
"About what?" she pressed.
"Nothing important," I replied, not wanting to dive into my complicated feelings for Ling. "Just school and stuff."
"Right," Yoko said, but I could tell she wasn't convinced. She exchanged glances with Faye, who shrugged but didn't pry further.
As we pulled up to my penthouse, I took a deep breath, stepping out into the cool night air. My friends hugged me goodbye, and as I walked into my home, the weight of the evening settled on my shoulders.
I felt more determined than ever to excel in my studies and impress Ling. The night had reminded me of the longing I felt and the potential for something more. I was ready to confront my feelings and discover what lay ahead.
With that thought, I closed the door behind me, ready to face whatever challenges awaited me, including the most daunting one of all: my heart's desire.
