Scythe's POV

Wow. This is going to suck hardcore. We are at the northern part of Florida, nearer to our destination, but it seems like they were expecting us. Maybe they weren't, but they were put on high alert.

We will take our trans-matter teleporter to get to the northern part of Florida. We will then enter Maryland, which is right at Washington D.C

In any case, most of our weapons were worse for wear, but we had managed to pull through into the Floridian state county up north. We had sought to defend any remaining CASTLE bases, but the enemy was too strong in their offense. They took most of our strongholds by force, and forced us to scurry quickly. Texas was bitching about her boyfriend back in 2035, but I told her that if she survived this, she would be able to return home safely. Luckily she stopped bitching about it, much to Sierra's relief.

Shadow's POV
I've almost made it to their position, but his group is very hard to track. I thought back to the moment I met Scythe, and hurried forward to catch up to them. The border between Maryland and Florida is about to close in three days time, if I don't catch up to them now, I'll never be.

FLASHBACK
14 July 2027 (Scythe's 18 Birthday)
Scythe's POV
A rainy night it was, with thirty people in my house having the party of their lives, when suddenly, there was a shadowy figure knocking on my door. I had no idea who that was, for all I know, he could have had a cat with him so I invited him in. "Hi, I'm Sigma, we met at the academy remember?" I looked puzzled, then I remembered, Shadow Sigma, he hadn't told me his real name. I had heard rumors that he hasn't used his real name since young.

"Hey Sigma, haven't seen you in two years, where do you go to after the academy?" I asked him. "Oh, I went to look for a job. I also had some specialized training after leaving the academy." It wasn't so easy in the academy, it was harder on the field.

"So what brings you here?" I questioned him. "Oh, I remembered today was your birthday, and I decided to drop by and I also bought you a gift. Here." He handed me a pack of cards. How did he know I liked to do magic using my cards? It was a modified deck, had gold and silver etchings. Must've cost a bomb. "Thanks Sigma! I always need more cards...most of mine are worse for wear." I grinned. "Yeah, I wish I could have been there to see some of them."

-END OF FLASHBACK-
Scythe's POV
Night fell quickly, and we had made it into Maryland. Now we need a break, so we stopped for the night. We sat at the makeshift camp we made, before we made for D.C. Texas wanted a break anyways, she was annoying the fuck outta Sierra and I. Sparks had a bit of a shock from the explosion that took out the border lines between Maryland and Florida. X-Ray needed a break after the heated battle outside the enemy base of operation in Florida.

We slept through the night, Zero and Omega insisting on keeping guard. They'll be getting the next rest immediately. Although they said they couldn't sleep after what they had been through in their past.

Texas' POV
After sleeping through the night, I woke in a sweat. I had ragged breath and my eyes darted from shadow to shadow, grabbing my pistol and obviously shaken to the bone. "What's wrong?" Zero looked concerned about my psyche. "Yeah, just extremely worried about my boyfriend. If I don't make it outta here..." Zero shook his head. "You'll make it, all you have to do is to concentrate on the mission at hand and you'll be fine. Just don't think about it, and you will find yourself back in his arms in no time." Zero smiled, causing me to punch Zero's arm lightly. "Thanks Zero." He nodded, spouting laughter that woke the entire team, except for Omega of course.

"Well, time to move on yeah?" Scythe asked. Everyone nodded. I pulled back my rifle's slide and let another bullet enter the chamber. "Let's go!" I stood up immediately and packed my gear securely in my pack.

Four hours later...

We are pinned. AGAIN. LIKE HOW MANY TIMES. I hate this. But at the same time I love the fact I get to snipe. I covered Sierra and Zero the most, as they were the ones in front most of the time. We brushed through half of Maryland like we are a hurricane.

Then I saw my cover being blown. We were about to enter another county, but we had to be stealthy. Many guards with launchers stood atop the building complex. I breathed in the shouldered my scope. I exhaled, calming my nerves. I dropped the gun to my side. I needed a better range for this engagement. Once things kicked off, I'll be on the prow for survivors. I unslung my modified M4A1 with an extended barrel and enhanced night vision scope. I shouldered and took aim.

Out the corner of my eye, I could have sworn I saw a shadow. It was the same shadow I saw before. It's here too? Maybe it's an ally from our time. I didn't care, shouldering the rifle to take the shot.

Then shit hit the fan. Literally. The windmill overlooking the building shook with the rumble of a mountain, teetering on its now weakened base, and slowly toppled over, crashing down and killing many guards in the process. I took this chance to take out many of the launchers, along with a machine gunner which would prove to be a problem so I quickly dispatched him.

I ran towards the steeper slope for some cover, but was soon under fire by some apparently good shots. "Damn, I'm being pinned down here!" Sierra immediately rushed and gave me a reprieve before I shouldered my rifle again and took several shots.

CRACK!CRACKCRACKCRACK...I blasted away at the opposition.

Suddenly, my aim was shifted, I had sworn I felt something push my shoulder. My aim was shuddered by a nearby mortar. I took aim and squeezed the trigger. "ZERO! WATCH...!"

Oh fuck. Shit. Crappy fuck. "ZERO?! No..." I ran over to the limp body, turning the body around.

I could see only fate. Fate of this passing. Zero is dead. Because of me. I did it. It's my fault. "Texas? The fuck? Why?!" Sierra pulled me up, I fell off into the deep end and broke down. "I...I got pushed, and...and, I didn't know he was there...and I.." I sobbed. I broke. "Why him? Of all of us?!" Sierra could only stare. "Scythe?" Sierra nodded.

"Texas, are you sure you saw a shadow?" He looked at me suspiciously. "Yes, a dark shadow. He was holding something. It had a heart on it."

"I believe you. This person is trying sabotage our mission he has already succeeded by getting Texas to eliminate Zero. He may have already been thinking ahead. Texas isn't going to like this, but he may come for you next. He knows how good you are apparently, so we have to be careful in Washington. Is that clear team?" We all nodded. Texas was still crying over her sniper rifle. Sierra picked up texas, and pulled her over to an alcove and laid Texas on her back. "Shhh...it'll be okay...it wasn't your fault..." Texas cried more and more. "I'm sorry Sierra, it is my fault." Her eyes were very red and she looked exhausted. "No it isn't, besides the guy was trying to kill Zero, you just happened to be in his way. Any of us would have lead to the same outcome. No one could have anticipated it. Now get some rest." She laid her head down and closed her eyes.
