Chapter 34: Healing Old Wounds

Derek laid in the bed watching Thomas sleeping on him. He had his phone in his hand opened to the messages from Elaine.

There were now three messages. The second and third ones were new to Derek the first one was a plea from Elaine to not ignore her request

"Derek I know you're mad about the way I left. I promise I didn't do it on purpose. Please give me a chance to explain" text read. The third one was obviously sent after Glen had spoken to her.

"Derek I'm so happy you're okay. I'm so sorry if my text made you sad. I never wanted you to be hurt. I love you, my reasons for leaving don't matter, all that matters is that you're okay. I'm so sorry brother, I will always love you and when and if you are ready to talk I'll be here."

Derek sighed as Thomas lifted his head and looked at him then at his phone. "Glen is right you should hear what she has to say then decide if you want her around or not"

Derek took a deep breath and pressed the call button. He put it on speaker. The phone rang twice. "Hello Derek is that you?"

Derek started crying immediately he forgot how much his sisters voice sounded like their mothers.

"Derek I'm so sorry. Are you okay? Do you need anything?" She rushed out. Derek calmed himself.

"I'm fine Elaine, I wasn't going to call you but I have a new family that thought it was a good idea to hear you out so... I don't know what you can say that will make it okay what you did" he told her with much more attitude then he intended but the anger was starting to take over him.

"You're right, there is no excuse that truly justifies what I did to you, Anthony and especially mom. I would like for you to know why I did it but I would rather talk to you in person about it. Could I come down to the hospital and see you?"

Derek was going to say no but Thomas nudged him and nodded his head.

Derek sighed "ya I guess that's fine."

Elaine sighed in relief "I don't live too far from the hospital I'll be there in just a few."

They hung up and Derek rolled his eyes at Thomas "the things I do for my family"

Thomas kissed his lips "and this family loves you for it" the two kissed softly a few times before it became more passionate and the two were heating up when a nurse walked in

"Oh gosh I'm so sorry. I'll come back" she blushed as Derek laughed

"No, it's fine come do your job this boy can calm himself" Thomas mocked being offended as he laughed with Derek and got off the bed

"I can't promise his blood pressure isn't up after that but hopefully not too critical" he teased, the nurse laughed "you two make such a cute couple. I love it!!" She beamed at both men.

"Anthony it's time to get up" James shook him awake "what time is it?" He asked, squinting at how light it was outside.

James chuckled "it's noon, Glen doesn't want you kids to sleep all day or else you won't sleep tonight. Zach and Glen are making brunch so get up and get dressed." He swats Anthony's butt playfully.

The thirteen year old got out of bed and looked at his phone and realized his birthday was just 5 days away and they hadn't talked about it at all. He wondered if they forgot after all it would be his first birthday as a Ripley and maybe Derek didn't remind them it was coming up.

Anthony shook his head at himself "really Anthony how selfish, your brother almost died because of you but all you think about is your birthday? You don't deserve anything, you're stupid and selfish and cruel."
