chapter six.

"He was right"

"Who?"

"Sebastian," I state, "these lessons are tiresome." Kelby snorts, flicking the page over in his notebook. Apparently when Christina asked him to reteach me magic he'd basically put together a whole syllabus.

"Tiresome or informative?" He grinned, somehow finding humor in my pain. I glared at him while using my wand to follow the instructions he had given to me earlier, flicking to the right then straight down. Despite doing everything correctly in terms of theory, still nothing worked. I groaned and slammed my wand on the table.

"You know what would make these lessons so much better?"

"You treating your wand with more respect?" Kelby said.

"I'll treat it with respect when it works for me." I shot back.

"We've talked about this Elora, your magic is–"

"In me, yes I know, not my wand," I sigh, "regardless of where my magic is, we need a change of pace. Some new scenery perhaps...?" Now it's his turn to groan. In the three and a half weeks Kelby had been visiting and attempting to teach me magic I had mentioned it on every second visit. I wanted to escape the house desperately. While there was no physical lock on the door, my lack of magic and Christina's constant hovering any time I even looked at the front door told me I was not allowed to leave.

"Lora..."

"Cmon Kelly! It'll be great, we'll go to Diagon Alley. What could go wrong there?" I pleaded, Kelby stared at me a moment too long. The despair on his face felt out of place so I ignored it. "Sebastian could use an outing too, his letters to me are getting more and more desperate as the days go on."

He watches me and sighs, "I suppose... maybe..."

"Yes!" I cheer.

"A short trip to Diagon Alley, I'll tell Sebastian to meet us there." He begins to think out loud, "If I disapparate us from your front doorstep and back again..."

My mind wanders, disapparation. That was how I had been transported from the hospital. I could distinctly remember the popping sound of Irving and Christina returning home from work everyday. They never appeared directly in the house, only on the front doorstep.

"How does that work?" I question, interrupting his verbal planning. He stared at me confused. "Apparation?"

"Oh, right." He nodded, "Destination, Determination and Deliberation". He spoke in a mocking voice, clearly quoting someone else. "It's a complicated act of magic. You need to be able to focus on where you want to go clearly, completely clear your mind and imagine yourself transported to that place."

"Sounds hard." I sighed, "Why don't you, Christina and Irving apparate directly into the house? You always land on the doorstep."

"That's the wards, they prevent anyone from disapparating or apparating into a specific location. Most houses have them. Usually they will allow specific people to directly enter but some magicfolk consider the wards weaker that way." He explained and it dawned on me, Christina didn't want to even risk someone entering the house without our knowledge or consent. Kelby glanced up at the clock on the wall or the kitchen. "It's late, if I don't leave now Sebastian will be insufferable. He's taken to cooking dinner for the both of us, which is great, in some ways. Home Cooked meals were few and far between before he was around however if I'm home even a minute after I told him I'd be he throws a fit."
