The morning light gently filled the room as Vanessa blinked awake, her head nestled comfortably in Astra's arms. It was early, 7 a.m., and her shift with the ER team was going to start in an hour. But for a few blissful moments, she let herself stay there, taking in Astra's warmth, feeling the strength of her arms wrapped around her like a shield. Vanessa felt a rare sense of peace, wishing she could freeze the moment and stay like this all day.

Finally, knowing she had to leave, Vanessa slowly slipped from Astra's embrace, careful not to wake her. She moved quietly to her closet, pulling out a few essentials: a simple bra, underwear, a pair of fitted jeans, and a button-up shirt. Gathering her things, she tiptoed into the bathroom, closing the door softly behind her.

In the mirror, Vanessa caught her reflection, taking in the damp waves of her curly-wavy hair as water dripped down her shoulders. Her toned arms and legs reflected the hard work she'd put into the gym; she was proud of her strength, of the power her body could hold. But her eyes were drawn to her side, where a faint purple bruise still lingered over her rib from the bike accident. She ran her fingers lightly over it, feeling a dull ache, and traced the small, precise scar left from the surgery that had saved her from internal bleeding. Each mark told a story—of strength, of survival, of pushing through. But this morning, those scars were a reminder of vulnerability, too.

She dried off quickly and slipped into her clothes, leaving her hair damp. She barely had time to think as she fastened each button and straightened her shirt. The clock was ticking, and she didn't want to disturb Astra, so she moved quickly but quietly.

When Vanessa stepped out of the bathroom, a soft creak from the door seemed to stir Astra. She shifted slightly under the covers, her eyes slowly fluttering open, adjusting to the early morning light. A faint, sleepy smile crossed Astra's lips as her gaze settled on Vanessa. It was a look that made Vanessa's heart melt, a mixture of warmth, gentleness, and just a hint of playful curiosity.

Vanessa moved over to the bed, her footsteps light. She leaned down, brushing a kiss against Astra's soft lips, her lips lingering for just a moment longer than usual, but without deepening the kiss, knowing that if she did none of the two girls would have been able to stop. "Good morning," she murmured softly, barely above a whisper.

Astra's eyes sparkled, and she gave a soft chuckle, her voice still thick with sleep. "Good morning," she replied, her tone teasing as she lifted a hand to touch her forehead where Vanessa's kiss had landed. "And wow... first time your kisses don't taste like nicotine. I think I could get used to this." She let out a low, playful laugh, her grin stretching wider as she met Vanessa's gaze.

Vanessa felt warmth rush to her cheeks, a laugh escaping her. "Enjoy it while it lasts," she shot back, rolling her eyes in mock exasperation, but there was a softness to her words, a fondness she didn't bother hiding. She sat down on the edge of the bed, just close enough that her knee brushed against Astra's hand resting on the blanket.

Astra stretched, letting out a contented sigh as she sat up a bit, pulling the blanket loosely around her shoulders. She gave Vanessa a curious, slightly confused look as she noticed the button-up shirt and jeans. "Where are you going so early?" she asked, her brows knitting slightly. "It's Sunday, V. No classes, no alarms, no schedules until Monday morning. Thought we could actually enjoy a day to ourselves."

Vanessa hesitated, a small smile tugging at her lips as she glanced down, smoothing the front of her shirt almost absentmindedly. "I promised the ER team I'd take a shift today. They're a bit short-handed, and...well, you know how it is," she said, glancing at her watch to check the time.

Astra's expression softened, her gaze warm and understanding. She reached out, slipping her fingers through Vanessa's, her thumb tracing gentle circles on the back of her hand. "Take care of yourself, okay?" Her voice was quiet, and though she tried to hide it, there was a note of concern behind her words.
