The hospital halls had grown quieter as the morning slipped into the steady rhythm of the day. Dr. Bellamy's shift was ending, but he couldn't leave without checking on Vanessa one last time. The soft beeping of the monitors greeted him as he stepped into her room. Astra was seated in her usual spot, her hand protectively holding Vanessa's, her head leaning against the edge of the bed. She looked up when Bellamy entered, her tired eyes silently asking for reassurance.

Bellamy approached the bed and conducted a quick assessment. He checked the monitors, observed Vanessa's breathing, and noted the faint but consistent movement of her chest. Turning to Astra, he offered a small smile. "Her vitals remain stable, and these small movements you've mentioned are a good sign. She's progressing, Astra. Slowly, but she's moving forward."

Astra nodded, though her grip on Vanessa's hand didn't loosen. "I just... I need her to wake up. To know she's okay," she whispered, her voice thick with emotion.

Bellamy placed a reassuring hand on Astra's shoulder. "She's fighting. Give her time, Astra." With that, he took a deep breath and added, "I need to talk to the dean about what happened. I'll make sure this situation gets the attention it deserves."

Astra watched as Bellamy left the room, her chest tightening with a mix of gratitude and apprehension. She turned back to Vanessa, gently stroking her hand. "You hear that, Van?" she murmured. "He's fighting for you too. Everyone is."

The dean's office was a stark contrast to the sterile environment of the hospital. Dr. Bellamy stood before the large mahogany desk, his posture straight and resolute. The dean, a silver-haired man with a thoughtful expression, listened intently as Bellamy recounted the events of the past 24 hours.

"These boys, Ben Laddler and Jack Mactyre, have crossed a line," Bellamy said, his tone firm but controlled. "Vanessa is lying unconscious in the hospital because of their actions. This isn't just about campus behavior; this is criminal. Something needs to be done."

The dean leaned back in his chair, his fingers steepled as he absorbed the information. "Dr. Bellamy, I assure you, we take these matters very seriously. If what you're saying is accurate, both students will face immediate disciplinary action. However, if Vanessa intends to pursue this further, she'll need to involve the authorities and take legal action."

"She shouldn't have to fight this alone," Bellamy replied, his voice laced with frustration. "She's been through enough. I'm asking you to act now, to set an example that this kind of behavior has no place here."

The dean nodded slowly. "I'll initiate a review and ensure appropriate steps are taken. Rest assured, we'll do our part."

Bellamy's jaw tightened, but he nodded in acknowledgment. "Thank you, Dean. I'll update Vanessa's friends when she wakes up."

The day dragged on painfully slowly. The sunlight that had bathed the room earlier began to fade, casting a soft orange glow through the window. Astra hadn't left Vanessa's side, though exhaustion had begun to weigh heavily on her. She sat on the edge of the bed, careful not to disturb any of the wires or tubes attached to Vanessa, and gingerly climbed in beside her. She laid down, curling herself against the space that felt so achingly empty.

She pressed her forehead to Vanessa's shoulder, whispering, "I'm here, Van. Please, just open your eyes. Just let me see you again."

The waiting room outside remained a rotating hub of Vanessa's closest friends. Luke, Maya, Simon, Cassie, and Amy took turns visiting, each of them offering support not just for Vanessa but for Astra, whose strength seemed to be unraveling under the strain.

When it was Luke's turn, he stood beside the bed with his hands in his pockets, watching as Astra softly spoke to Vanessa. The corner of his mouth lifted in a faint smile as he observed Astra's hope ignite each time Vanessa's hand tightened in response. But when there was no further reaction, his smile faded, replaced by a somber expression.
