Chapter 1: Run away from the exploding bomb.

Red, flashing lights down the hallway. "Emergency! Emergency!" was being said over and over again by a random computer generated female, her voice very monotonous.

Just keep running, I thought. Just keep running.

Okay, in case if you were wondering, I'm running through an evacuated building, trying to find a bomb, deactivate it, or run for my life. So yeah, just a normal day as a spy.

Almost dying, waiting to die, running for your life.

You just get used to it after a while.

After a turn down the hallway, I see the bomb, an electrical red timer ticking down before it explodes.

2:56.

2:55.

2:54.

Each second seamed to go bye too fast as I tried to go through my head which wire to cut.

Is it the red one or the blue one?

It was the red. I remember Rex saying:

"Don't cut the red wire."

Oh.

Maybe it was the blue wire.

I scrambled over the ticking bomb, pulled it open, said a few prayers before I may die, and cut the blue wire.

The timer vanished.

No more numbers.

Thank the Lord, I thought.

Thank the Lord.

***

So, because I was stopping a bomb from exploding my head off (while I'm bragging, also running for my life) I never got to tell you my name.

My name is Kate.

Agent Kate, to you that is.

And Rex is calling in right now, so I have to go.

***

Sitting in a meeting room.

Boring.

Blah, blah, blah.

Oh wait, did he just say my name?

I think he did.

Better start paying attention to his very boring long spe-

"Agent Kate? Were you even listening to any of this?" Rex asks me.

"Yeah Rexy. Totally."

"Well then, why don't you tell us what you heard then?"

My cheeks started to blush. I hated it when he did this to me.

"I listened when you said 'Agent Kate? Were you even listening to my boring essay? I should tell your mommy about this!'" saying this all in my old lady/grandma voice, pointing and shaking my finger at Rex.

Like I expected, everybody bursts out laughing.

Haha.

"Ugh" Rex mutters. "Anything else?"

"Um, no." I say.

"Agent Kate, you have got to take these things more seriously. You always listen to me when I call you during your missions. Everybody listens in here but you!"

"Well, to be honest Rexy, but when I'm running for my life, I kind of need a little bit of advice then. The only thing I'm running for my life from is this essay you put together."

I earned a few snickers hear and there, and Andrew, one of my partners even pat me on the back.

"You know what, Kate? I really think you should have been listening to my whole 'essay' you were talking about, because you are going to be sent into another mission." Rex says.

What?

Already? I usually get at least a 2-day break in between all of my missions.

"Oh great, what now?" I mutter, loud enough for him to be able to hear.

"There is a couple, Joe Scrimptor and Elizabeth Walter, who are expert criminals, murderers, and kidnappers. The last reporting of them being seen was at Seaside Coast Academy, which is where you're going to be sent for your next mission."

The first thing that comes to mind though, is not about them being criminals, or how this is unfair, or even that I may need backup (which according to my calculations of knowing Rex so well, is that he already has backup ready) is one thing.

"What about my summer vacation?" I blurt out.

Way to go, Kate, acting like a 5-year old.

Then again, 5-year old kids wouldn't be normally deactivating bombs and evacuating buildings and going after serial killers.

Normally.

I push the thought out of my head and go back to the subject at hand.

"You're not going now, Kate. At the beginning of the school year. You and Tommy will be going undercover and tracking down one of Joe and Elizabeth's workers. His-"

Of course it is a 'his' not a girl. Villans never think girls can pull off anything.

"name is Jacob Tallagot. His real name, that is. His alias is Jack Sparrow."

What?

Did I just hear what I thought I heard?

Who is stupid enough to have an undercover name be a pirate's name?

"Haha! You should have seen the look on your face Kate! Would Jack really be that stupid? No!" I watch as he and the rest of the agents start laughing, some of them holding their stomachs or are even on the floor.

Once everybody stops laughing (5 minutes later) Rex continues.

"His real alias is Jack Sylvia. You and Tommy will pose as a couple as you track down Jack."

"What's he after?" Tommy says, the first time he spoke during this whole meeting.

"Not exactly sure if he's after somebody or someone. But we need you guys to follow him around."

"When's the mission start?" I ask, mostly out of plain curiosity.

"Next week. And get excited. You're going for your freshman year of college. Happy packing! Meeting dismissed."

Everybody pushed their chairs away from the table, stood up, and walked through the door labeled 'Exit'.

As I followed the crowd, my eyes met Tommy's and that moment felt like an eternity, his blue eyes twinkling, lighting up the room.

I turned my eyes away from his and followed the crowd out of the door.
