The following morning, Jack and Sarah were back in the office, preparing for their meeting with Charles Dawkins. They'd barely had a chance to speak on the way to work, both lost in thought and weighed down by the looming pressure of the case. The tensions from the previous day hadn't dissipated—instead, they felt even more pronounced, a subtle edge that lingered between them.
As they sat across from each other, reviewing their questions for Dawkins, Jack noticed Sarah's distracted expression. She was biting her lip, her fingers tapping lightly against the table as if her mind was somewhere else. He tried to focus, but the silence grew heavy, thick with unspoken tension.
Finally, he broke the quiet. "You seem distant this morning. Everything okay?"
Sarah looked up, her expression guarded. "I'm fine. Just thinking about the case."
Jack frowned, sensing there was more to it. "It's not just the case, is it? You've been... different lately. Distant. I get that this is stressful, but if there's something on your mind, you can tell me."
She hesitated, glancing away before answering. "Jack, I just feel like we're not on the same page lately. It's like we're so focused on the investigation that we've lost sight of everything else. I know the stakes are high, but... I'm worried. About us."
Jack felt a wave of frustration rise within him. He'd been giving everything he had to this case, juggling work with their relationship as best as he could. The last thing he wanted was for Sarah to feel neglected, but he couldn't ignore the mounting pressure they were under.
"Sarah, I'm doing my best," he said, his voice sharper than he'd intended. "We both knew this case would demand a lot from us. We can't afford to lose focus now, not when we're so close. I thought you understood that."
She stiffened, clearly taken aback by his tone. "Of course I understand that, Jack. But this case is all we ever talk about, all we ever focus on. I don't want to be just your partner on a case—I want to be more than that. I want us to still be us."
Jack's frustration flared, and he leaned back, crossing his arms. "So what are you saying? That I'm not trying hard enough? That I'm putting the case above our relationship?"
Sarah's eyes flashed, her voice tinged with hurt. "That's not what I'm saying, Jack. But maybe I'm saying that you've been so consumed by this case that you're not seeing how it's affecting us. How it's affecting me."
They sat in tense silence, the weight of their words hanging in the air. Jack's mind raced, caught between his loyalty to the case and his loyalty to Sarah. He loved her, but he couldn't shake the feeling that her concerns were pulling him away from the one thing he needed to focus on.
After a moment, he spoke, his voice quieter. "Sarah, I want to make this work. I really do. But we can't let our personal issues distract us. Not now. We're on the verge of something big with Dawkins, and if we lose our footing, Kane wins. Everything we've worked for falls apart."
Sarah looked down, her expression pained. "I know that, Jack. But sometimes, I feel like the case is all that matters to you. Like we're just... secondary. And I can't help but wonder what happens when this is over. Will we still have anything left?"
Her words struck a nerve, cutting through his frustration. He hadn't intended for the case to overshadow their relationship, but he realized that, in many ways, it had. He reached for her hand, hesitating before gently wrapping his fingers around hers.
"Sarah, I'm sorry," he said, his voice filled with sincerity. "You're right. This case has taken a toll on us, more than I wanted to admit. But you have to know that I'm doing this for us too. I want a future where we don't have to look over our shoulders, where we can be together without Kane's shadow hanging over us."
