The deadline imposed by the Deputy Attorney General loomed over the DA's office like a storm cloud. The once-methodical rhythm of the investigation had given way to a frantic pace as the team scrambled to piece together the final connections that would keep their case alive. Despite the chaos, Jack and Sarah knew it was time to take a step back and reassess not only their strategy but their priorities.
Jack stood at the edge of the rooftop parking lot, the city sprawled out before him in a sea of lights. The cool night air did little to soothe the tension in his chest as he turned over the events of the past few weeks. Sarah joined him a few moments later, a mug of coffee in her hands and a thoughtful expression on her face.
"You've been quiet," she said, leaning on the rail beside him.
Jack nodded, his gaze distant. "Just thinking."
"About?"
Jack hesitated, then exhaled sharply. "Everything. The case. How close we've come, and how easily it could all fall apart. Feels like we're constantly one step away from losing control."
Sarah sipped her coffee, letting the silence stretch between them before speaking. "We've been running so hard, I think we've forgotten why we started. It's not just about taking Kane down—it's about making things right for the people he's hurt."
Jack turned to her, his expression softening. "You're right. Somewhere along the way, it's felt more like survival than justice."
Sarah placed a hand on his arm, her touch grounding him. "Then let's realign. If this case has taught me anything, it's that we're at our best when we remember what matters most."
Jack met her gaze, a faint smile tugging at his lips. "And what's that?"
"Each other," Sarah said simply. "The team. The people we're fighting for. If we lose sight of that, Kane wins—whether we take him down or not."
The next morning, Jack and Sarah called a meeting with the team. The conference room buzzed with the low murmur of conversation as Amanda, Leo, and Eleanor filed in. Jack stood at the head of the table, his posture calm but commanding.
"First things first," Jack began, his tone steady. "We're all feeling the pressure, and it's easy to get caught up in the urgency of this case. But we need to take a step back and refocus. This isn't just about meeting a deadline—it's about delivering justice."
Sarah nodded, picking up where Jack left off. "We've all seen how far Kane's network reaches and how much damage he's done. But this case is bigger than Kane. It's about the lives he's destroyed, the systems he's corrupted, and the people who are counting on us to make this right."
Amanda leaned back in her chair, crossing her arms. "So what's the plan? Because I don't think 'refocus' is going to stop the Deputy Attorney General from freezing our accounts."
Leo smirked. "Or keep Kane's people from throwing up more roadblocks."
Jack smiled faintly. "You're right. Refocusing doesn't change the obstacles, but it changes how we approach them. We've been reacting to everything Kane throws at us. It's time to take control."
Eleanor arched an eyebrow, her expression thoughtful. "You have something specific in mind?"
Jack nodded. "We double down on what we know works. Amanda, you and Leo keep chasing the financial connections. But instead of trying to prove everything at once, focus on one thread—something simple, clear, and irrefutable. If we can present even one solid piece of evidence, it strengthens our case."
Sarah added, "Meanwhile, Jack and I will follow up with the witnesses and push harder on the warehouse connections. If we can get one of those facilities tied directly to Kane, it'll bolster the financial records and give us leverage."
