As the trial against Kane approached, Jack found himself back in the DA's archives, surrounded by boxes of old case files. The room was dim, lit only by a single overhead light that cast long shadows across the rows of shelves. Each box held pieces of the city's history, cases that had been solved, shelved, or, in some instances, forgotten.

Jack's task today wasn't just about Kane; it was about connecting the dots between past and present. Kane's influence ran deep, and revisiting old cases could provide insight into the methods he used to manipulate the city's legal system. If they could tie these cases to his current operations, it would further solidify their case against him.

Sarah joined him a few minutes later, carrying two cups of coffee and a determined look. "I figured you'd need this," she said, handing him a cup. "How's it going?"

Jack gave her a tired smile. "It's like looking for a needle in a haystack. Kane's name rarely appears directly in these files, but his fingerprints are all over them—shell companies, bribes, witnesses who mysteriously changed their testimonies. It's infuriating."

Sarah sat across from him, pulling one of the files toward her. "We knew this wouldn't be straightforward. But if there's one thing we've learned, it's that Kane leaves patterns. We just need to find them."

They worked in silence for a while, flipping through files, jotting down notes, and cross-referencing names and dates. Occasionally, Jack would mutter something under his breath—an expletive or a frustrated sigh—prompting Sarah to glance up and offer a reassuring smile.

After an hour, Sarah paused, holding up a file. "Jack, look at this. Remember the Cooper case from three years ago? It was about a series of fraudulent construction contracts awarded to a now-defunct company, Rivergate Holdings."

Jack nodded, his interest piqued. "Yeah, I remember. The contracts were inflated, and the company folded as soon as the payments cleared. No one was ever charged."

Sarah pointed to the file. "Look at this. Rivergate Holdings was registered to an address that matches one of the shell companies we found in the Eagle's Crest files. And the same attorney who represented Rivergate is now on Kane's defense team."

Jack's eyes narrowed as he leaned over to examine the document. "So Kane was likely behind Rivergate all along, using it to siphon city funds under the guise of legitimate contracts. If we can prove that, it ties his methods back years."

Sarah nodded, a flicker of excitement in her eyes. "It's not just about Rivergate. There could be other cases like this—ones where his name never appeared, but his influence did. If we can establish a pattern, it'll show the court that this isn't an isolated incident. It's a years-long scheme."

They dove back into the files with renewed vigor, their focus sharp as they searched for connections. Over the next several hours, they uncovered more links between Kane's shell companies and old cases, including several involving mysterious property seizures and unexplained changes in witness statements.

One case stood out: the Harris family, who had been forced out of their home under dubious circumstances five years earlier. Their property had been seized after a developer claimed unpaid debts, but the Harris family maintained the debts were fabricated. The developer? A subsidiary of Clearwater Holdings, one of Kane's companies.

Jack leaned back in his chair, his jaw tightening. "This is it, Sarah. It's not just one case—it's a pattern of abuse that spans years. Kane's been using his network to exploit vulnerable people and hide behind layers of legality."

Sarah looked at the stack of files, her expression a mix of anger and determination. "He's built an empire on other people's suffering. But now we have the tools to dismantle it. These cases might not all lead directly to criminal charges, but they'll show the court exactly who Kane is and how far his corruption reaches."
