The vineyard glow of their wedding day had faded into memory, replaced by the gentle rhythm of daily life as Jack and Sarah settled into their new reality as newlyweds. The past few weeks had been a whirlwind of thank-you notes, unwrapping gifts, and finding space for their combined belongings in Jack's once-sparsely decorated apartment. Life wasn't slowing down for them, but for the first time in months, it felt grounded—normal in a way neither had experienced in a long time.
Jack woke early, the sunlight streaming through the blinds casting soft patterns on the walls. He glanced to his left, smiling as he saw Sarah still sleeping, her hair fanned across the pillow. Quiet moments like this had become his favorite, a chance to pause and appreciate the peace they had worked so hard to find.
He slipped out of bed carefully, not wanting to wake her, and headed to the kitchen. The scent of freshly brewed coffee soon filled the apartment, a comforting start to the day. As he poured a cup, he heard soft footsteps behind him and turned to see Sarah, wrapped in one of his old flannel shirts, her hair slightly tousled.
"Good morning, Mrs. Mercer," Jack said, his grin widening.
Sarah yawned, leaning against the counter. "Good morning, Mr. Mercer. What time is it?"
"Early," Jack replied, handing her a mug of coffee. "I couldn't sleep."
She took a sip, her eyes brightening slightly. "Still getting used to this whole 'married life' thing?"
Jack chuckled, leaning against the counter beside her. "Maybe. Or maybe I just like the quiet mornings with you."
Sarah smiled, resting her head briefly against his shoulder. "You're such a romantic."
"And you love it," Jack teased.
The DA's office hadn't slowed down after the trial. If anything, their workload had only grown as the fallout from Kane's conviction rippled through the legal and political landscape. With Kane's network exposed, new cases were cropping up, each one demanding the same meticulous attention Jack and Sarah had given their last.
On their first morning back at work after their honeymoon, the team greeted them with a mix of good-natured teasing and genuine warmth.
"Look who decided to join us again," Amanda called out as Jack and Sarah walked into the conference room. "How was paradise?"
"It was perfect," Sarah replied, setting her bag down. "No cases, no deadlines—just us."
Jack added, smirking, "And now we're back to reality."
Leo raised an eyebrow. "Reality that involves at least five new files waiting for you both. Welcome home."
Eleanor entered the room, her usual commanding presence tempered by a rare smile. "Good to have you back, Mercer and Reynolds. I mean—Mercer and Mercer." She gestured to the stack of folders on the table. "We've got our hands full, but nothing you two can't handle."
Despite the workload, Jack and Sarah found ways to bring pieces of their newfound personal life into their professional world. Lunchtime runs to their favorite café turned into quick brainstorming sessions, and shared desk space became an opportunity for quiet, supportive moments amid the chaos.
One afternoon, as they poured over a particularly complex case, Sarah glanced at Jack and smiled. "You know, for a couple of newlyweds, we don't exactly have the most romantic days."
Jack looked up from his notes, his brow furrowed. "What are you talking about? Analyzing financial records is incredibly romantic."
Sarah laughed, tossing a crumpled piece of paper at him. "You're hopeless."
