It was already 11 at night and my work hasn't even started yet. Beside me Yeonjun stifled a yawn as he drove us to the station house. Yun-sae was sprawled on the back seat of the car without any care, too tired to have decency. We all were tired but the way Yeonjun's eyes were tearing up so often, I feared we will soon need an ambulance to drive us.
"Do you want me to drive? You look tired and sleepy." He looked at me with surprise before turning back to the fortunately almost empty road and stuttered through his words. "Uh-sir, it's alright. We are a minute away." Well, I hope these sixty seconds go safely then. I do not wish to die in a pathetic way like a road accident with no case to solve.
We were back to being quite when I remembered something
"How did you two know they both would be there?" My question caught him off-guard as he looked up at the mirror to seek out to Yun-sae. But sadly, for him, that woman was out cold. Realizing he was stuck in this situation alone he sighed. "It was an anonymous tip. A small chit dropped by in our meal we ordered at a cafe." My breathing stopped for a second. A chit. "Was it a small color paper?" It can't be, but even if they are what are the chances they are from the same person?
"Ye-wait let me show you. I have it." I watched in anticipation as he fished out a crumbled white color paper with small flowers printed on it. I took it from his hands and straightened it. "It's the same." I can't believe just how tangled up this year is going to be. The writing on the paper is the same as other remaining clues. A long sigh leaves my mouth as I lean back on the seat.
"What's the same?" Yeonjun asked in confusion and this time I found myself tongue tied. One part of me wants to lay out all the previous clues in front of him because taking it all alone with no one to share is burdening me, but the other part wants to keep it to myself and go to the depth of this to find out who is this and what are they trying to do. The clues or notes if I should call them, used to appear after the killings, but now it's before, and instead of in rhymes, they are giving out direct locations like actual clues.
Or did I miss something?
"Huh? Oh, it's nothing. Did we reach?" I brushed his question off and luckily, he didn't pry it. We were right in front of the station house as Yeonjun parked the car beside another. I turned back to wake Yun-sae but to my surprise she was already awake. "Good morning, sleeping beauty." I chuckled as she groaned at my words, Yeonjun also laughing since we all know there won't be any sleep to have a good morning tonight.
"Alright, meet me in the office in 5, I am going to report to the head." I announced as I got off the car and started walking up the stairs when I remembered something and turned back. "One more thing, please bring me a coffee. Extra sweet." With that I resumed back knowing that old hag will have more energy than me and he will use it to chew my ears off.
Inside it was almost empty, almost. Some of the staffs were still rushing back and forth, noting down reports, managing things. Yet the first person I met by my rotten luck was my brother. He was again with his frat friends and by the looks of it, they had an after-work dinner, face flushed with a red hue, and eyes half lidded as if they will shut down any time now. If I brought breathalyzer now all of them would be legally drunk.
"Ohh! Taehyung! My little brother!" His voice brought most of the attention and once again I considered how bad my luck is. He walked over to me and the whiff of alcohol coming from him was too strong for me to stand straight and not cover my nose. "Huhh?! Why are you--Yah! Do I fucking stink to you?" I closed my eyes in tiredness as he leaned into my personal space, polluting it. In my mind I imagine slapping him so hard his jaw dislocates, and he ends up bleeding from his nose then vomiting all the food his ate on the floor, making a mess of himself in front of everyone. What a sight it would be, fucking disgusting but memorable.
"What are you closing your eyes for!! You brat! You are disrespecting your older brother, your senior!! YAH! YOU BASTAR-" Just then I felt a whoosh of air in front of my face and at the same time a silence spread over coupled with a few gasps. In confusion I opened my eyes to see my brother on floor, a trail of blood down his nose and lips, coughing. Just like I imagined. But I didn't slap him, so who?
"Who the fuck is this trash? Spitting out rotten cells while being totally out of it!" My head snapped to right and for the first time I witnessed Yeonjun being angry. Till now, his image in my mind was a cute kid who is too sentimental for his own good. But right now, this man in front of me, with his jaw clenched, looking down his nose at my brother was a very new side of his I became aware of. It put my brother's anger to shame.
"My brother." Right as I said, gone was the temper and now he looked like a flustered puppy with his eyes wide and lips parted in shock as he tried to reason out. "Sir-I...I didn't-..he was shouting so I thought-I am sorry for hitting your brother!" His eyes casted down in apology yet he didn't make a move to help my drunk brother who was now being lifted by his equally drunk colleagues. Interestingly, this small commotion lifted up my mood from being worried and stressed.
Everyone went back to what they were doing while the drunk idiots were also out of the sight. He still stood unmoving with his eyes down looking like a kicked puppy. I chuckled at the way his ear tips were turning red and raised my hand to ruffle his hair. "You remind me of a puppy, let's go." He finally looked up; his face filled with surprised as he followed me to my office.
I guess I will report to the head later.
"Sir, I really didn't know he was...your brother. I am so-" I flicked his forehead with the marker I was holding to stop him from speaking further. "Shut up. You did nothing wrong. They were drunk and misbehaving." Once again, his eyes widened--as much those tiny ones could--as he settled down on his chair while I slide on my desk because it's more comfortable for me. "Moreover, I was imagining exactly what you did, except he didn't threw up his food and made a disgusting mess of himself. That would have been gold."
"Who made a mess? And what the fuck, did something happen? Why there's blood on the floor outside?" Yun-sae walked in right then, holding three cups of coffee and a paper bag as she sat on the other empty chair. "Extra sweet." She handed my coffee to me then turned to Yeonjun to hand him his, "No sugar- which reminds me, ew! I tried no sugar and had to eat a block of sugar to purify my tongue. I mean I get it you yourself are a walking cupcake with rainbow sprinkles, but you need some sugar in your tastebuds too."
Her comparison of cupcake to Yeonjun made me laugh as she wasn't really wrong. He was a walking ball of sunshine. The said boy whereas was hiding his face behind his hands though one could tell he was smiling with the way his cheeks were full.
"So, who will interrogate the woman?" Yun-sae silently raised her hand as she sipped on her coffee. I nodded at her then turned to the other officer in front of me who was, just like her, deep invested in his coffee. "Yeonjun, make sure you inform them to give the medical reports as soon as possible." He gave a silent nod before taking a long sip, since he had a straw, the slurping noises filled the office.
I couldn't help but sigh and take a sip of my own coffee, humming as the warm and sweet liquid touched my tongue. Now the only sound heard in the room was of slurping and blowing as the aroma of the coffee filled our surrounding. It felt peaceful and relaxing if we ignore the white note in my jeans pocket and the other clues in my first drawer sitting silently as if their revelation won't cause an uproar.
Well, I would like to enjoy the peace till it lasts. Hopefully it is not the silence before the storm.
