The next few days passed in a blur. There was a strange, tense calm around Southland College, as though the air itself was holding its breath, waiting for something to break. I spent most of my time trying to focus on my studies, but every glance, every moment I spent outside of the classroom, I found myself looking over my shoulder. There was a new layer of paranoia that had crept into my life, a constant hum of unease that I couldn’t shake.

Adler and I had barely spoken, save for quick, clipped messages about the plan to gather information on Rio. Sofia was still digging, trying to find more evidence to bring Rio down. But even as we made these plans, something gnawed at me. I couldn’t ignore the thought that we were all playing into Rio’s hands. How did we know he wasn’t already aware of our moves? How did we know that the game wasn’t rigged from the start?

I couldn’t help but think back to the conversations I’d had with Rio, the moments when he’d shown me his vulnerability. Could someone so seemingly sincere be capable of the things Sofia’s research had revealed? Could I really trust Adler to protect me from him, or was I caught in a twisted cycle of lies from both sides?

I sat at a corner table in the student café, staring at my untouched coffee. The smell of it wafted up, but it did nothing to settle the knot in my stomach. I felt eyes on me, and when I glanced up, I saw Lily walking toward me, her face filled with concern.

"Hey," she said softly, sitting down across from me. "You look like you haven’t slept in days."

I forced a smile, but it felt brittle. "I’m fine. Just a lot on my mind."

Lily narrowed her eyes, clearly unconvinced. "You don’t have to pretend, Aniya. Something’s going on, and I know you’re not telling me everything. Is it about Adler? Or Rio?"

I shifted uncomfortably in my seat. "It’s... it’s both, I guess."

Lily leaned forward, her expression softening. "I know this whole thing has been a mess, but you need to talk to someone. You can’t keep bottling it up."

I opened my mouth to speak but hesitated. Was I ready to tell her everything? I wanted to confide in Lily—I trusted her, and she was the one person I knew wouldn’t judge me no matter how messy my life had become. But there was a part of me that was afraid. Afraid that telling her everything would mean opening a door I couldn’t close.

Before I could respond, a voice interrupted us, a voice I didn’t expect to hear.

"Is this a private conversation, or can anyone join?"

I looked up to find Julian standing behind Lily, a smirk on his face. He looked as casual as ever, his hoodie pulled low over his forehead, his hands shoved into the pockets of his jeans. But there was something in his eyes—something that hinted at knowing more than he let on. I couldn’t place it, but I felt a shiver run down my spine.

"Julian," I said, trying to mask the tension in my voice. "What are you doing here?"

Lily rolled her eyes playfully. "Clearly, he’s stalking you. What else would he be doing?"

Julian chuckled and slid into the seat next to Lily. "I’m not stalking her. Just checking in." His eyes flickered to me, then back to Lily. "I heard about your little… investigation. Thought I’d see how things were going."

My pulse quickened. He couldn’t have heard about the investigation—could he? No one knew but the few of us who were directly involved. I looked at Lily, who was watching me intently, and for a moment, I could see the unspoken question in her eyes. Did she know something I didn’t? Had Julian been following us?

"What investigation?" I asked, trying to keep my voice steady.

Julian leaned back in his chair, looking like he was deciding whether or not to push further. "I’ve been hearing some whispers around campus," he said casually. "Seems like people are starting to catch on to Rio. He’s been acting weird lately, making moves on people—especially Adler. And you, Aniya. You’ve become a bit of a target, haven’t you?"

My heart skipped a beat. "What are you talking about, Julian?"

Lily was staring at him now, her eyes narrowed. "Julian, what do you know?"

He shrugged, his eyes flickering to me, then back to Lily. "Nothing. Just things I’ve overheard. You two know about Rio’s reputation, right? You’re not the only ones who are starting to figure out what he’s really like. But be careful. He’s not the kind of guy you want to mess with."

I could feel my stomach twist into knots. It wasn’t the words themselves that were so alarming—it was the way he said them, the way his gaze lingered on me as if he knew something more. Something I didn’t know.

"I don’t get it," I said quietly, looking between Julian and Lily. "Why would Rio target me like this? What does he want from me?"

Lily shook her head. "I don’t know, but this whole thing doesn’t feel right. It’s like he’s playing everyone. And now he’s set his sights on you."

I looked down at my coffee cup, its surface still rippling slightly from when I’d fidgeted with it earlier. My mind was racing—every instinct was screaming at me that something was wrong, that I needed to get ahead of this. Rio wasn’t just a rival to Adler. He wasn’t just someone with a few bad habits. He was playing a much bigger game, and I was a pawn caught in the middle.

"Maybe we should just stop all of this," I said, my voice quiet. "Maybe it’s time we stop trying to expose him and just let it go."

Lily’s eyes widened in shock. "Are you serious? We can’t just back down now! Not after everything we’ve uncovered."

I knew she was right. I couldn’t back down. Not after seeing the truth. But the weight of the decision felt heavier than ever. The game had already started, and I couldn’t walk away from it. I had to find a way to win.

Before I could respond, Julian stood up, his expression turning serious. "Look, I know this is a lot to process. But you need to be careful, Aniya. Rio’s not the only one with secrets. There are others out there who are playing their own game, and it’s not just about him and Adler. You’ve got to think about what’s best for you, not just what everyone else expects."

His words hit me like a ton of bricks. What was best for me? Was I even in control of my own life anymore, or had I already become too tangled in a web of deception?

Later that evening, as I sat alone in my dorm room, I found myself staring at my phone, scrolling through the messages from Adler. He hadn’t said much—just a few updates about their progress with the investigation and a brief line asking how I was doing. I hadn’t responded yet. I wasn’t sure what to say. How could I tell him I wasn’t sure I trusted anyone anymore?

I lay back on my bed, staring at the ceiling, my thoughts spinning. Everything was unraveling too quickly. Adler, Rio, Julian, Lily, Sofia—who could I trust in all of this? And what would happen when the storm finally broke?
