The next few days felt like a slow-motion train wreck. Nothing seemed to move at a normal pace anymore. Every conversation I had, every glance exchanged, was laced with tension. I could feel it in the air, thick and heavy, pressing in on me from all sides. My friends noticed the change, the way I was pulling away from everyone. Even Julian’s pointed remarks and Adler’s quiet concern couldn’t shake me from the fog I was in.
I wasn’t sure who to trust anymore.
I spent hours at my desk, sorting through the information we had on Rio, trying to connect the dots. But the deeper I dug, the murkier it became. The pieces didn’t fit. It was like trying to assemble a puzzle with missing edges and too many confusing colors.
I was pulled from my thoughts when my phone buzzed, the screen lighting up with a message from Adler: *We need to talk.* Simple. Direct. I hadn’t heard from him in a couple of days, and the words left a strange chill running down my spine.
I typed out a quick response: *Where?*
*Come by my place after class.*
I stared at the message for a long moment. Something about it felt urgent, more serious than anything he’d said before. Maybe it was the way he signed it off—no smiley faces, no casual tone. Just a statement.
I closed my laptop with a sharp snap, my mind whirling. There were still too many questions that needed answers. What was Adler really hiding? Was he playing a part in this drama that I hadn’t seen? And where did Rio fit into it all? There was no easy answer, and I couldn’t escape the feeling that everything I thought I knew was slowly slipping through my fingers.
By the time I got to Adler’s apartment, my thoughts were a mess of jumbled questions. I knocked lightly on the door, my heartbeat quickening as I waited. It was a long moment before the door creaked open. Adler stood there, his face tight with concern, his eyes scanning me for any sign of what was going on inside my head.
“You alright?” he asked quietly, stepping aside so I could come in.
I nodded, forcing a smile. “Yeah. Just a lot to think about.”
Adler gave me a knowing look, his brow furrowed. “I know what you mean.”
We sat on the couch, a comfortable distance between us. The apartment felt colder than usual. It wasn’t the temperature, though—it was the space between us, the invisible wall that seemed to grow taller with every passing day. Adler was always so easy to talk to, but now, it felt like I was walking through a maze of unspoken words.
“I need you to be honest with me,” I said, my voice quieter than I intended.
Adler looked at me, his lips tightening into a thin line. “About what?”
“About Rio. About everything. What’s really going on? I don’t understand why he’s still in the picture, why you—why you’re so involved with this.”
Adler’s gaze didn’t waver, though something flickered behind his eyes. “I’ve told you everything I know, Aniya. There’s nothing else. You have to believe me.”
I took a shaky breath, the weight of his words settling over me like a stone. “But I don’t. Not entirely. I need you to tell me the truth. If you’re hiding something, anything… I can’t keep doing this. I need to know if I can trust you.”
There was a long pause as Adler studied me, his jaw clenched, his fingers gripping the edge of the couch. I could tell he was wrestling with something, something he didn’t want to say. It made me feel small, like I was demanding too much when all I really wanted was answers.
Finally, Adler spoke, his voice strained. “I’m trying to protect you, Aniya. That’s all I’ve ever been trying to do. But I can’t do it alone. I need your help.”
I raised an eyebrow. “What are you talking about? What do you need me to do?”
Adler stood up, pacing slowly in front of me. He rubbed the back of his neck, his gaze distant. “I can’t explain everything right now. There’s a lot more at play than you realize. And Rio is just the tip of the iceberg. There’s a whole network of people involved in this—people who have been pulling strings for years, and I’m caught in the middle of it.”
The words hit me like a slap. "A network? What are you saying?"
He stopped pacing and turned to face me, his expression dark. "I’ve been trying to get close to Rio for a reason, Aniya. I’ve been trying to find out who else is working with him, who’s controlling everything behind the scenes."
I swallowed hard, my throat dry. "And what do you expect me to do? How do I fit into this?"
Adler took a step toward me, his eyes never leaving mine. "I need you to trust me. You’ve been closer to Rio than anyone. You’ve seen what he’s capable of. I need to know everything about him—everything you can remember. Any small detail, any conversation, any hint that might tell me who he’s really working for."
I felt my pulse quicken. This was bigger than I thought. Bigger than just Rio and his obsession with me. Adler wasn’t just fighting for control over the situation—he was fighting to expose something much darker, something deeper.
"Adler, this is all too much," I whispered, my voice trembling. "I’m scared. I don’t know if I can do this anymore."
He looked down at me, his expression softening just a little. "I know it’s a lot to take in. But I’m not asking you to do it alone. I’m here. And we’ll get through this together. I promise."
I wanted to believe him. I wanted to believe that everything would be okay if I just trusted him. But the more I thought about it, the more questions kept swirling around in my mind. What if Adler wasn’t telling me everything? What if I was being used, just like I had been with Rio?
"You have to make a choice, Aniya," Adler said softly, as if reading my thoughts. "You can walk away and pretend none of this is happening. Or you can stay and fight. But you need to decide."
The words hung in the air between us, heavy with the weight of everything that had happened, everything that was yet to come. I didn’t know what to do. I didn’t know who to trust anymore.
But one thing was clear: the calm before the storm was over. The battle was beginning.
