I could feel Adler’s eyes on me as I walked away from him. Each step I took felt heavier, weighed down by everything he’d just said, by the quiet plea in his voice. I had told him I needed to know the truth, but as I made my way toward the campus edge where Rio had asked to meet, I wasn’t sure what “truth” I was even searching for anymore.

The clock struck midnight, and the campus was blanketed in silence. The usual paths, once familiar and safe, seemed twisted and foreboding under the dim glow of the streetlights. I pulled my jacket tighter around me as I made my way toward the edge of the campus, where Rio had said he’d be waiting. My footsteps echoed in the quiet night, and with each step, my heart beat faster.

When I arrived, he was there, leaning against a tree with an almost casual indifference. But his eyes, dark and intense, fixed on me the moment I appeared, and a slight smirk tugged at his lips. Something about that look sent a shiver down my spine.

“Aniya,” he said, his voice low. “I didn’t think you’d come.”

“I’m here,” I replied, keeping my tone steady despite the knot of anxiety twisting in my stomach. “What do you want, Rio? Why did you ask me to meet you?”

He didn’t answer right away, just studied me for a long, tense moment, his expression unreadable. When he finally spoke, there was a strange intensity in his voice. “I’ve seen you with Adler a lot lately.”

I felt a prickle of defensiveness rise in me, and I straightened my shoulders. “Adler’s my friend. He’s… he’s someone I trust.”

Rio’s expression hardened. “Trust. Funny thing, that.” He took a step closer, his gaze pinning me in place. “Do you really trust him, Aniya? Or is he just the ‘safe’ option?”

“What is that supposed to mean?” I shot back, feeling the anger bubble up inside me. “Adler has been nothing but supportive. He’s been there for me, even when you…” I trailed off, unsure of how to finish the sentence. The last thing I wanted was to admit how conflicted I felt, especially not to Rio.

Rio’s eyes narrowed slightly, a flicker of something almost like pain crossing his face. “I know you feel something for me, Aniya. I can see it, even if you don’t want to admit it. That’s why you’re here, isn’t it?”

I hesitated, swallowing hard. “I came because I want answers, Rio. I want to understand why you’ve been acting this way, why you’re sending me these… these messages. I want to know the truth about who you are.”

The smirk faded, and for a brief moment, something raw and vulnerable broke through his usual cold facade. “You think I’m playing games? That I don’t care about you?” He shook his head, his voice laced with frustration. “I’m not your perfect hero, Aniya. I don’t fit into the safe little box that Adler does. But that doesn’t mean I don’t care.”

I took a shaky breath, feeling torn all over again. His words hit something deep inside me, a part of me that wanted to believe him, that wanted to think he wasn’t as dangerous as Adler had warned. But then I remembered the messages, the threats, the uneasy feeling that had followed me ever since he entered my life.

“Then why the messages, Rio?” I demanded, my voice trembling. “Why make me feel like I’m being watched, like I’m… like I’m in danger?”

He held my gaze, his expression unflinching. “I sent those messages because I needed you to understand, Aniya. This isn’t a game. What I feel for you—it’s real. But Adler… he’s trying to come between us, trying to make you doubt me.”

I could feel my heart pounding, every fiber of my being alert. “Adler isn’t trying to come between us. He’s trying to protect me.”

“Protect you?” Rio scoffed, a bitter edge to his tone. “And who’s going to protect you from him, Aniya? You think he’s some perfect saint, but he has his own agenda. He wants you to himself, and he’ll do whatever it takes to make that happen. Even if it means turning you against me.”

The accusation stung, even though I knew Adler’s intentions were genuine. But Rio’s words planted a seed of doubt, one that I couldn’t quite shake. What if…? I forced myself to push the thought away, unwilling to betray Adler’s trust like that.

“I don’t believe you,” I whispered, though the conviction in my voice wavered. “You’re twisting things. Adler would never hurt me. He’s been honest from the start, unlike you.”

For a moment, Rio’s face softened, and he looked at me with an expression that was almost pleading. “Maybe you’re right. Maybe I don’t deserve your trust. But I’m here now, Aniya, trying to be honest with you. Trying to show you that what I feel is real.”

I wanted to believe him. I wanted so badly to think that he wasn’t as dangerous as everyone had warned. But I couldn’t ignore the warning signs, the creeping sense of unease that seemed to follow him wherever he went.

“Then prove it,” I challenged, crossing my arms. “If what you feel for me is real, if you’re not trying to manipulate me, then stop with the games. Stop with the messages and the threats. Let me make my own choices.”

Rio stared at me for a long, tense moment, his jaw clenched. I could see the conflict in his eyes, as if he were waging a battle within himself. Finally, he nodded, a resigned look crossing his face. “Alright. I’ll stop. But just know that if you choose him… if you walk away from me, I’m not going to wait around.”

The words hung in the air, heavy and final. I felt a pang of guilt, of sadness, but I knew this was the right choice. I needed clarity, space to figure out my feelings without the pressure of Rio’s intensity looming over me.

“I understand,” I said quietly, taking a step back. “But you have to give me that chance, Rio. If what we had was real, then you’ll respect that.”

For a moment, he looked like he wanted to say something more, to reach out and stop me. But then he took a deep breath, his gaze hardening as he nodded. “Fine. I’ll back off. But don’t expect me to be there waiting if you change your mind.”

With that, he turned and walked away, disappearing into the shadows of the campus grounds. I stood there, feeling a strange mix of relief and sorrow, the weight of his words pressing down on me.

As I made my way back toward the dorms, I felt the emptiness of the campus settle around me. For the first time in weeks, I was alone with my thoughts, free from Rio’s presence but burdened by the lingering ache of my decision.

And yet, even as I walked away, I couldn’t shake the feeling that this wasn’t over. That somehow, this choice—this night—would come back to haunt me.
