The next morning, I could barely focus on anything. I kept replaying my conversation with Rio, his intense gaze, and the heavy finality of his words. He said he’d back off, but his parting look told me that letting go wouldn’t be easy for him—or for me. Despite the relief I’d felt walking away, a small part of me felt like I’d left something unresolved, like I’d turned my back on a story that wasn’t meant to end just yet.

Adler’s concerned voice echoed in my mind too. I had pushed him away in my search for truth with Rio, but he’d only been trying to help me. And after all of this, Adler was still the one I trusted most. I needed to tell him about my conversation with Rio, about everything I had finally laid to rest, or so I hoped.

I found Adler in the campus café, tucked in a corner, his notebook open in front of him as he scribbled with a pen. He looked up as soon as I entered, his expression softening when he saw me approach. For a second, he seemed guarded, like he wasn’t sure if I’d come with more news about Rio, but then he gave me a gentle smile.

“Hey,” he said, closing his notebook. “How are you?”

“Honestly, I’m not sure,” I admitted, sliding into the seat across from him. “But I thought you should know… I talked to Rio last night. I told him I needed space, that he has to let me make my own choices.”

Adler’s eyes held a glimmer of hope, but he kept his expression even, his voice steady. “How did he take it?”

“He said he’d back off,” I replied, though I couldn’t hide the uncertainty in my voice. “But I don’t know if he’ll actually stay away. There was something in the way he looked at me, like he was already planning his next move. It’s hard to explain.”

Adler reached across the table, his hand resting on mine. “I’m proud of you, Aniya. It takes courage to confront someone like Rio. He’s complicated, and I know he means something to you, but you did the right thing by setting boundaries.”

I looked down, letting the warmth of his hand calm the lingering anxiety I felt. “Thank you, Adler. For everything. You’ve been so patient with me, even when I’ve been… difficult.”

He chuckled softly. “You’re not difficult, Aniya. You’re just caught in a situation that’s hard to navigate. But I’ll be here as long as you need me.”

We shared a quiet moment, the silence between us comfortable and reassuring. I was finally starting to feel like I could move forward, like I was gaining control over my own life again. But that peace didn’t last long.

The door to the café swung open, and Sofia Rodriguez, the campus gossip blogger, strode in with a purposeful expression. She spotted me instantly and made a beeline for our table, her eyes alight with the glint of a new story.

“Aniya! Just the person I was looking for,” she announced, pulling up a chair without invitation. Her tone was a mix of excitement and curiosity, as though she’d stumbled upon a juicy secret. “So… are the rumors true?”

I exchanged a glance with Adler, feeling my heart sink. “What rumors?”

“Oh, come on. You know what I’m talking about.” She leaned in, her eyes gleaming. “You and Rio. Word is that things got pretty intense between you two last night. People are saying he’s not going to let you go that easily.”

I felt a surge of frustration. “Sofia, you don’t know anything about what’s going on.”

She raised an eyebrow, clearly unbothered by my tone. “Maybe, but everyone’s talking about it. And I thought you might want a chance to set the record straight before people make up their own stories.”

Adler’s jaw tightened, and he spoke up before I could respond. “Aniya’s personal life isn’t campus gossip, Sofia. Maybe you should find something more constructive to write about.”

Sofia’s gaze shifted to him, a hint of a smirk on her lips. “Oh, I would, but the people have spoken. Everyone wants to know what’s going on between Aniya, Rio, and you, Adler. Besides, it’s not like this is the first time Rio’s been involved in a scandal. You know that as well as anyone.”

Her words hit a nerve, and Adler’s expression darkened. I could feel the tension between them, an unspoken rivalry that had been brewing for months. Sofia had always enjoyed stirring the pot, and now, with a love triangle to play with, she was in her element.

I took a deep breath, struggling to keep my frustration in check. “Look, Sofia, whatever you think you know about Rio and me—it’s not true. I’ve already told him to back off. I’m not interested in being part of your gossip blog.”

She shrugged, feigning innocence. “Suit yourself, Aniya. But the truth has a way of coming out, one way or another.” She gave me a pointed look, then stood up and walked away, her heels clicking against the floor as she left the café.

As soon as she was gone, I felt a wave of relief, but Adler looked troubled. He ran a hand through his hair, his gaze distant as he stared after Sofia.

“She’s not going to stop, is she?” I asked, feeling a sinking sense of dread.

“No,” Adler replied, his voice tight. “Sofia thrives on drama, and she’ll do whatever it takes to keep her blog interesting. But we can’t let her control the narrative, Aniya. People might start believing things about Rio, about us… things that aren’t true.”

I nodded, realizing that the line between truth and rumor was blurring more every day. I had finally found the courage to set boundaries with Rio, but now it felt like the entire campus was invested in our twisted story, pulling me back into a web of doubt and suspicion.

As we left the café, I couldn’t shake the feeling that Sofia’s warning held a darker truth. Rio might have promised to give me space, but Sofia’s prying eyes suggested that the world around us wasn’t going to let our story rest. And if Rio was anything like the person everyone warned me about, he wasn’t going to let go quietly.

I walked alongside Adler, my mind racing with everything that had just happened. And for the first time, I truly wondered if I was capable of keeping control of my own life in the face of all these forces swirling around me.

“Maybe we should talk to Detective James,” I suggested quietly, the words coming out before I’d even fully thought them through. “He was already looking into those messages I got… maybe he could help.”

Adler nodded, his expression thoughtful. “It might not be a bad idea. If anything, it would at least show Rio that you’re serious about moving on.”

I took a steadying breath, feeling a new resolve settle over me. “Then let’s do it. I’m done letting other people write my story.”

Adler smiled, a look of pride flickering across his face as he nodded. “We’ll figure this out, Aniya. Together.”

And as we made our way to the campus security office to set up a meeting with Detective James, I felt a small glimmer of hope. For the first time, I wasn’t alone in this fight. And maybe, just maybe, I could finally start to reclaim the life I’d almost lost to shadows and secrets.
