The days blurred into one another after my conversation with Adler. Every time I thought I had a grip on the situation, the more tangled the web became. Rio’s presence seemed to haunt me everywhere I went—his voice, his smirk, the strange, unsettling way he seemed to know everything about me. But Adler’s warnings weighed heavily on my mind too. Could I trust him? He seemed sincere, but he had been hiding so much from me. What if there was more to his past with Rio than he was letting on?
I needed answers. I needed clarity. But every time I tried to untangle the mess, I only ended up more confused.
---
It was a Friday afternoon when things started to unravel further. I was sitting on a bench outside the student center, the autumn breeze making the leaves scatter across the lawn, when I saw someone approaching from the corner of my eye. It was Julian Styles, Adler’s best friend, and a fellow member of Y2K. I wasn’t sure whether to be relieved or anxious. Julian had always been kind to me, but he had a tendency to be quiet and observant—almost too observant sometimes. And with everything going on, I couldn’t help but wonder if he was keeping secrets, too.
“Hey, Aniya,” Julian greeted me, taking a seat beside me without asking. His eyes studied me with that familiar intensity, his expression unreadable.
“Hey, Julian,” I replied, offering a tight smile. The tension between us felt thick, like there was something unsaid that hovered between us.
After a long silence, Julian spoke. “So… I heard about what happened with Rio yesterday. You okay?”
I bit my lip, not sure what to say. The encounter with Rio still rattled me, but I didn’t want to admit how much it had shaken me. “I’m fine. Just… trying to figure things out.”
Julian nodded slowly, as if he was processing something. “I get it. But I think you’re in way over your head, Aniya. Rio’s not someone you want to get tangled with.”
I stiffened at his words. “I know that. But… Adler says he’s dangerous, and I don’t know who to trust anymore.”
Julian’s eyes softened, and he leaned in slightly. “I know Adler means well, but he’s not the only one who knows Rio. I’ve seen it before. Rio doesn’t just mess with people—he controls them. And if he’s got his eyes on you, you need to be careful.”
I felt a cold chill spread through me. “What do you mean, ‘he controls them’?”
Julian’s voice dropped to a whisper. “He’s not just a pretty face with a bad attitude. Rio’s dangerous, Aniya. I’ve seen the way he manipulates people. Gets them to do things they don’t want to do. Makes them think they need him. And once he’s in, he doesn’t let go.”
I swallowed, feeling a tight knot form in my stomach. “But why me, Julian? I’ve barely talked to him outside of Y2K. I don’t even know why he’s doing this.”
Julian’s eyes darkened. “Because that’s what he does. He targets people who don’t see him coming. People like you, who are smart, independent, but also a little bit naïve when it comes to dealing with guys like him.” He paused, as if deciding how much to say. “I’ve seen him do this before. He’ll use whatever he can—charm, manipulation, threats—until you don’t know who you are anymore. Until you’re so deep in it, you can’t get out.”
I shook my head, trying to process his words. “But Adler said Rio’s obsessed with control. Isn’t he just trying to mess with me?”
Julian hesitated before speaking again, his tone serious. “It’s not just about messing with you, Aniya. Rio’s after something bigger. He always is. And you’re just the next piece in his game.”
---
I stared out across the campus, trying to take in what Julian had just said. Was he right? Was Rio playing some twisted game with me, using manipulation and lies to get what he wanted? And if so, what was his endgame?
Before I could respond, my phone buzzed, cutting through the heavy silence between us. I pulled it out of my pocket, my heart skipping a beat when I saw who the message was from.
**Sofia**: *“I have more on Rio. Meet me at the library in 20 minutes. This could change everything.”*
I looked up at Julian, who had noticed the notification. “What is it?” he asked, his voice suddenly more urgent.
I didn’t answer immediately, my fingers tightening around my phone. The thought of meeting Sofia both terrified and excited me. She had been the one digging into Rio’s past, and now it seemed like she was close to uncovering something even darker.
“I have to go,” I said, standing up. “Sofia’s got something. I’ll see you later.”
Julian stood up with me, his expression unreadable. “Be careful, Aniya. Don’t let Rio get into your head. Whatever Sofia has, make sure you keep your guard up.”
I nodded, my heart pounding. “I will. Thanks, Julian.”
---
The walk to the library felt like it took forever, every step heavier than the last. My mind was racing—Julian’s warning, Adler’s cryptic comments, and now Sofia’s offer of more information. What was I getting myself into?
When I arrived at the library, I found Sofia sitting at one of the tables in the back corner, her laptop open in front of her. She looked up as I approached, her eyes sharp with purpose.
“You came,” Sofia said, a hint of a smile playing on her lips. “Good. I think I’ve found something that could finally answer all your questions.”
I sat down across from her, trying to keep my cool, even though my stomach was in knots. “What did you find?”
Sofia didn’t waste any time. She clicked through several documents on her laptop before turning it toward me. “Look at this.”
The screen displayed a series of photos and articles, all about Rio’s past. Most of them were from years ago, when he had been involved in several high-profile incidents—incidents that had been covered up or overlooked by his family’s wealth and connections. But there was something else. Among the photos was a police report detailing an assault charge against Rio from his teenage years. The charge had been dropped, but the details were chilling.
“He attacked someone,” Sofia said, her voice low. “A former friend of his. A girl who had tried to break things off with him. It was swept under the rug, but it’s all there. This isn’t just about manipulation—this is about something darker.”
I stared at the screen, the words swimming before my eyes. Rio wasn’t just playing a game with me. He was dangerous. And I had walked straight into his web.
---
I looked up at Sofia, my heart sinking. “What do I do now?”
Sofia’s eyes were filled with something close to pity. “You need to be careful, Aniya. Rio’s not going to stop until he gets what he wants. And right now, that might be you.”
