The days that followed the meeting in the library felt like a blur. I couldn’t shake the feeling that the walls were closing in around me. The campus, once familiar and safe, now felt like a stage for something much darker. Rio’s threats, his constant surveillance, had shaken me more than I cared to admit. But what unsettled me even more was the knowledge that Adler was fighting this battle on his own as much as he was trying to protect me.
Despite Adler’s assurances that we were in this together, I couldn’t ignore the growing distance between us. His past with Rio was tangled up in ways I couldn’t fully understand, and the more I learned, the more I questioned everything I thought I knew. Was he hiding more from me than he had already confessed?
It was late in the afternoon when I received the text from Julian. The message was short, but it sent a chill through me.
**Julian:** *“We need to talk. Rio’s getting bolder. Meet me at the coffee shop.”*
I didn’t hesitate. I grabbed my bag, my mind racing with questions, and made my way to the small coffee shop on the edge of campus. It wasn’t a place where students gathered in crowds; it was quiet, almost isolated. Perfect for a private conversation, I suppose.
When I arrived, I found Julian sitting in the corner, his face tense, his eyes darting around nervously. He looked up when I entered, his expression softening ever so slightly when he saw me.
"Hey," he said, voice low. "Sit down. We need to go over some things."
I slid into the seat across from him, my mind still reeling. "What’s going on, Julian? What did you find out?"
Julian glanced around again before leaning forward, speaking in a hushed tone. "It’s worse than we thought. Rio… he’s pushing things too far now."
I felt a wave of unease wash over me. "What do you mean?"
Julian leaned back, his hands pressed together in front of him. "There’s more to Rio’s past than just violence, Aniya. His obsession with control goes back years. I’m talking about more than just you. He’s been doing this with other girls—getting them to fall for him, making them feel like they’re the only ones who matter. Then he pulls the rug out from under them. He isolates them, manipulates them, and when they’re at their most vulnerable, he uses their weaknesses against them."
I swallowed, the room suddenly feeling too small. "So, this isn’t just about me?"
"No," Julian said firmly. "It never was. You were just the latest target. He’s been building this web of control for a long time."
I felt sick to my stomach. My mind flashed back to the times Rio had showered me with attention, made me feel special, like I was the one who mattered. And then, just as quickly, he had pushed me away. His erratic behavior, the subtle manipulations—it all made sense now.
"But why? Why me?" I asked, my voice barely above a whisper.
Julian’s gaze softened, but his expression remained serious. "Because you’re close to Adler. And Adler’s not someone Rio can control. He sees you as an obstacle. A weakness."
I felt the blood drain from my face. "What are you saying? That Rio’s targeting me just to get to Adler?"
Julian nodded. "Exactly. He wants to break Adler down, get to him where it hurts. And you’re in the middle of it all."
The weight of his words settled heavily on my chest. My role in this had never been just about my feelings or my choices. I wasn’t just caught between two men. I was a pawn in a much larger, more dangerous game.

A few hours later, as the sun began to set, Adler called. His voice was strained, the usual warmth replaced by a cool professionalism I hadn’t heard before.
**Adler:** *“Meet me at my place. We need to talk.”*
I nodded silently before hanging up. I had learned a lot from Julian, but something inside me told me that I still didn’t know the whole story. And now, Adler was asking me to come to him. It felt like a trap, but I had no choice but to follow.

When I arrived at his apartment, Adler was already waiting. He was pacing, his hands clenched into fists, his jaw tight. His usual confident demeanor was gone, replaced by something darker, more desperate.
"Adler?" I said softly, stepping into the room. "What’s going on?"
He turned to face me, his eyes filled with frustration and something I couldn’t quite place. "It’s worse than I thought. Rio’s not backing off. He’s been escalating. The threats… they’re not just empty words anymore. He’s doing everything he can to tear us apart."
I stepped closer to him, my heart racing. "What do you mean? What’s he doing?"
Adler ran a hand through his hair, his expression haunted. "He’s playing mind games. He’s trying to manipulate you, Aniya. He wants you to doubt everything. He wants to break you down, just like he’s done with others. He’s getting into your head, and I can’t just sit by and let him do it."
I took a deep breath, trying to steady myself. "What should I do?"
Adler’s gaze softened, and he stepped closer to me. "Trust me. Trust us. We can fight this together, but I need you to stay strong. Don’t let him get to you."
But as he said the words, I couldn’t help but wonder: how could I trust him, when I still didn’t know everything? Adler had his own secrets, his own dark past with Rio, and the more I learned, the more I questioned if I was truly prepared to face what was coming.
"Adler, there’s something I need to know," I said, my voice trembling. "Why didn’t you tell me the whole truth from the start? Why didn’t you tell me about your past with Rio?"
His expression faltered for just a moment, but then he took a step back, running a hand over his face. "I didn’t want to drag you into it. I thought I could protect you by keeping you away from him. But I see now that I was wrong. I should’ve trusted you, Aniya."
I shook my head, frustration bubbling up inside me. "But I’m already in this, Adler. I’ve already been pulled into this mess. I need to know everything. All of it."
Adler’s gaze was filled with regret as he met my eyes. "I’ll tell you everything. But you need to understand—I never wanted you to be part of this. I never wanted you to be in danger."
But as his words lingered in the air, I couldn’t shake the feeling that the danger wasn’t just from Rio. It was everywhere. And I wasn’t sure who I could trust anymore—not even Adler.
