The images on Sofia’s laptop screen were like a punch to the gut. I couldn’t look away, but I didn’t want to look at them either. The photos of Rio were meticulously taken—too perfectly staged for comfort. They depicted him at parties, at exclusive events, always surrounded by people who looked up to him, trusting him. But the files Sofia had uncovered painted a darker picture. Hidden behind the smile and charm was a trail of manipulation and deceit, stretching far beyond anything I could have imagined.

"I knew something was off," Sofia said, her voice a mixture of disbelief and concern. "But this… this is worse than I thought. Rio isn’t just playing games with people. He’s involved in something much bigger. Something dangerous."

I felt my stomach churn. "What do you mean? What is all this?"

Sofia clicked on one of the photos. It zoomed in on a shadowy figure standing next to Rio. It wasn’t just some random partygoer. This man, I recognized—he was a well-known businessman with ties to several shady operations across town. He’d been in the news once or twice, always in the background, but never directly implicated. But the fact that he was in Rio’s circle—too close to Rio—sent a chill through me.

Sofia was quiet for a moment as she clicked through more files. "I’ve been digging. Rio’s connections run deep. He’s not just a rival to Adler. He’s part of an underground network. The kind of network that controls a lot more than just people's reputations. Money, favors, influence—it’s all tied together."

I tried to steady my breath, my mind struggling to catch up with what I was hearing. "But why? Why would he do this? What’s his endgame?"

Sofia looked at me, her eyes filled with concern. "I don’t know. But I’m starting to think that Rio’s motives go beyond just getting at Adler. He’s building something. A power base. And you’re part of it, Aniya. Whether you realize it or not, he’s using you to move his pieces around."

I shook my head, trying to push away the nausea creeping up on me. "How is that even possible? I thought he cared about me. He’s been so… kind."

Sofia scoffed, shaking her head. "That’s how he works, Aniya. He lures you in with kindness and charm, makes you think you’re the center of his world. But all the while, he’s gathering information, making you trust him. And then, when you’re emotionally invested, when you believe in him, that’s when he makes his move."

I closed my eyes, the weight of her words sinking in. "But I didn’t ask for any of this. I never wanted to be in the middle of this fight."

Sofia’s expression softened, and she placed a hand on mine. "I know. But you’re already in it, and now you need to figure out how to get out before it’s too late."

The coffee shop felt suffocating, the walls pressing in around me. I glanced at the clock on the wall. I had to leave—had to face Adler. I couldn’t keep running from the truth, no matter how overwhelming it was. But as I stood up, Sofia’s voice stopped me.

"Be careful, Aniya," she warned. "Rio is more dangerous than you think. Don’t trust him, no matter what he says or does. And especially… don’t trust the people around him. They’re all part of his game."

I nodded, though I wasn’t sure I believed her entirely. Could everything I’d felt for Rio really be a lie? Was I just another pawn in his twisted game?

As I walked back to my dorm, I couldn’t shake the feeling that everything had shifted. The ground beneath me was no longer solid, and with every step I took, I felt like I was slipping further into a world I didn’t understand. Rio wasn’t just a jealous ex or an overzealous admirer. He was a player in a game I didn’t even know existed, and somehow, I was now a part of it.

When I finally arrived at Adler’s apartment, I could feel the tension in the air the moment I stepped inside. Adler was pacing again, as if he couldn’t sit still, as if the weight of the world was bearing down on him. He stopped when he saw me, his expression hardening slightly.

"Have you seen Sofia?" Adler asked, his voice low, a hint of suspicion in his tone.

I nodded, trying to keep my composure. "Yes. She showed me something. Something I think you need to see."

Adler’s brows furrowed, his expression darkening. "What did she show you?"

I took a deep breath before pulling out my phone and opening the files Sofia had sent me. I handed the phone to Adler, watching as he scrolled through the photos and documents. His face paled as he took in the information, his jaw tightening with every word, every image.

Finally, he set the phone down, running a hand through his hair in frustration. "I knew it. I knew Rio was involved in something. But this... this is far worse than I imagined."

I felt a knot tighten in my chest. "What do we do now? What’s the next step?"

Adler looked at me, his eyes filled with a mixture of anger and resolve. "We need to stop him. We need to expose him for who he really is. But we can’t do this alone. Rio has too much power, too many people backing him."

I swallowed hard, the weight of the situation pressing down on me. "But how? How do we stop him when we’re up against something this big?"

Adler stepped closer, his eyes never leaving mine. "We start by gathering everything we can. We expose his connections, his network. We make sure everyone knows who he really is. And then we take him down, piece by piece. Together."

I nodded, even though a part of me felt like we were in over our heads. The truth was out there now, and there was no turning back. I had to face the reality that Rio wasn’t just a man I had feelings for—he was a threat. And if we didn’t act soon, he’d tear everything apart.

---

That night, as I lay in bed, my thoughts raced. Adler had given me a sense of purpose, a plan to fight back. But I couldn’t shake the feeling that I was walking a dangerous path. The more I learned, the more questions I had. Who could I really trust? Was Adler truly on my side, or was he just as tangled in this web as Rio?

I closed my eyes, but sleep wouldn’t come. The shadows in the room seemed to grow longer, and I felt a chill seep into my bones. The war was only just beginning.
