The days that followed felt like I was walking through fog, each step uncertain, every decision heavy with the weight of unspoken truths. Adler’s words echoed in my mind as I tried to navigate the growing chaos around me: *You have to make a choice, Aniya.*
But how could I choose when everything was a blur of lies and half-truths? Adler’s request, his need for my help, had shaken me more than I cared to admit. He was asking me to trust him in ways I wasn’t sure I could. And in turn, I realized that I wasn’t sure I trusted myself anymore, either.
I had spent days going over every interaction I’d ever had with Rio. Every conversation, every moment where I thought he might be something more than just a dangerous rival, was under a microscope. Could it be that I’d been blind all along? That he’d been playing me from the beginning?
The worst part of it all was the nagging suspicion that maybe Adler wasn’t telling me everything. Maybe there was a bigger game at play, one that I didn’t fully understand yet. I couldn’t deny that I felt a pull toward Adler—he was my friend, the one who’d always been there. But Rio... Rio was different. I couldn’t explain it, but a part of me was still drawn to him. Maybe because he was unpredictable, maybe because of the mystery that surrounded him.
Sitting in the library, trying to focus on a textbook, I found myself zoning out, lost in thought. My phone buzzed on the table, snapping me out of my daze. I glanced at the screen, and my heart skipped a beat when I saw the name.
It was from Rio.
*I need to talk to you. Can we meet after class?*
My fingers hovered over the keys. Should I? Every rational part of me screamed not to engage with him, to stay away. But the part of me that still felt something for him—however complicated that something was—hesitated. Maybe this was my chance to understand the truth, to hear his side of things.
I couldn’t let myself be controlled by emotions anymore. Not with everything at stake. But then again, hadn’t I already been swept up in this game for far too long?
I took a deep breath, typing a quick response: *Where?*
*The courtyard. 4 PM. Please come.*
I stared at the message for a long moment. Was I making a mistake? My fingers hovered above the keyboard as doubt gnawed at me, but the decision was made. I would go. I needed answers. I needed closure.

When the clock struck four, I found myself standing by the old oak tree in the courtyard, the cool breeze ruffling my hair. The courtyard was mostly empty, the only sounds being the distant chatter of students and the rustling of leaves. I felt exposed, as if I were walking into a trap, but there was no turning back now.
A figure appeared at the far end of the courtyard, moving toward me with purpose. Rio.
He looked just as he always did—confident, almost cocky—but today, there was something different in his eyes. A hint of something darker. Something that told me this wasn’t just a casual meeting. This was something more.
When he finally reached me, he stopped a few feet away, his hands stuffed into his pockets. "You came," he said, his voice low.
I didn’t reply immediately. Instead, I studied him, looking for any signs of the man I’d once believed to be someone I could trust. But the more I looked at him, the more I realized how little I knew.
"Why?" I finally asked, my voice sharp. "Why all of this, Rio? Why the games, the manipulation? Why me?"
His eyes narrowed slightly, and for a moment, I saw something flicker behind them—regret, maybe, or a sense of vulnerability that was quickly masked by his usual arrogance. "It’s not as simple as you think, Aniya. You don’t understand."
"I don’t understand?" I repeated incredulously. "I think I understand perfectly. You’ve been playing me, using me as a pawn in whatever game you’re involved in. I don’t even know who you really are anymore."
Rio’s jaw tightened, and he took a step closer, closing the distance between us. "You think I’m the bad guy in all of this?" he said quietly. "You think I’m the one who’s been lying to you? You don’t know the half of it."
My heart was pounding in my chest, the air around us thick with tension. "Then tell me. Tell me everything, Rio, and maybe I’ll understand."
For a moment, he stood there, his gaze intense, almost searching. Then, as if he were making a decision, he sighed and stepped back. "I can’t. Not yet."
I felt a rush of frustration surge through me. "What do you mean, 'not yet'? This is your chance to explain everything, to make things right. Why are you holding back?"
He looked away, his jaw working, and when he spoke again, his voice was barely above a whisper. "I’m not the only one you need to worry about, Aniya. You’re not just caught between me and Adler. There’s more at play here, and you’re in danger. You need to get out of this before it’s too late."
My head was spinning. "What are you talking about?" I demanded. "Who’s behind this? What danger are you talking about?"
Rio’s eyes darted around, his body tense. He glanced over his shoulder, then back at me, his expression hardening. "I can’t tell you everything. I wish I could, but it’s too risky. Just... stay away from Adler for a while. Trust me, Aniya. It’s for your own good."
I didn’t know what to think. Part of me wanted to believe him, to trust that he had my best interests at heart. But everything about the situation felt wrong. Too many pieces were missing. How could I trust a man who had used me so thoroughly? How could I trust someone who had become part of the puzzle I couldn’t solve?
"I can’t just walk away from Adler," I said, my voice firm despite the doubt swirling inside me. "He’s my friend. I’m not going to turn my back on him now."
Rio’s face twisted in frustration. "Then you’re making a mistake. A big one."
Before I could respond, he turned sharply and walked away, disappearing into the distance, leaving me standing there, alone with my thoughts.
The chill in the air felt colder now. I stood rooted to the spot, my mind racing. Rio had told me to stay away from Adler, but why? What was really going on here? Was Rio trying to protect me, or was he playing some deeper game?
I didn’t have the answers. But the questions were growing louder, demanding an answer I wasn’t sure I was ready for.
