Remember when dragons and fairies were real?
When it took scratches only a blow to heal?
When happiness was all we could feel?
When our willpower was as strong as steel?

Remember when monsters lurked in our cupboards?
Now they pull on each nerve in our mind.
Remember when we used sticks as swords?
Now, too often, we leave our fantasy behind.

Every once in a while,
I sit there, thinking,
my lips form the smallest smile

when all those memories
flood my mind,
of a time where to sadness, I used to be blind.

Where have they gone,
those carefree moments?
When did it begin,
the mental torment?

I don't think we were even able to notice,
that one day, the world suddenly had turned grey
and all the colors that once shone in our eyes
were replaced by the tears
we try to keep at bay.

But I guess that is just the way of the world,
what growing up truly means.
With each piece of naivety
that we give away,
a faint ray of happiness
is all that will stay

one day.
