Todays song is bloodshot by Sam Tinnesz
Sleep isn't an option. It never is, especially when my head's so tangled with thoughts of her. No matter what I do, she won't leave my mind, slipping into every corner like a shadow I can't shake.
I roll over, groaning as I glare at my only companion—Cerb, my cerberus hound. He's watching me, three sets of eyes wide and unblinking, as if he's expecting me to do some kind of trick.
"What?" I snap, my voice gruff. "What are you staring at, you overgrown mutt?"
One of his heads growls low, almost offended. Typical. He knows how to get under my skin, and he's good at it.
"Oh, you want to start something?" I raise a brow. "Fine. I could use a distraction." I hold his gaze, daring him to keep looking. This is our little ritual, our ridiculous standoff—but tonight, I'm too worked up to let him win. "Come on, mutt. Who's going to back down first?"
Finally, after what feels like an eternity, he blinks, looking away. I grin, smug. "Ha! I win, you miserable beast."
He lets out an indignant bark, clearly irritated, and before I can react, he lunges, all three heads attacking me at once—licking my face like there's no tomorrow. I shove him, but it's hopeless. A hellhound with three heads, each one slobbering and determined? I might as well be trying to push a wall.
"Ugh, Cerb...cut it out!" I gasp between bouts of laughter, practically choking on his fur as he covers me in slobber. "Stop—no, seriously—stop!"
He's relentless. The beast doesn't let up until his back leg slips, and one of his massive paws lands right on a sensitive spot. Pain sears through me, and I double over, clutching my side, groaning.
"Ow! You little demon!" I glare up at him, but his faces—smug, unbothered, absolutely victorious—tell me one thing: revenge.
"What the hell was that for?" I grumble. "How about I cut your balls?"
He barks, almost laughing. If a dog could smirk, he'd be doing it.
"Oh, don't tell me you fell for her too," I sneer. "The big, bad cerberus all weak over a girl?" He barks again, louder, this time with a hint of offense. As if he's defending her.
"Don't give me that attitude," I mutter, rubbing my sore side. "I didn't do anything wrong. She's lucky I even let her go to the library." But even as I say it, the truth digs at me. I know I crossed a line. Even Cerb can sense it.
I rub my hands over my face, groaning. "Yeah...I really messed up, didn't I?" I ask, mostly to myself.
A huff of breath from Cerb feels almost like a sigh of agreement. Wonderful. Even my dog thinks I'm an idiot.
"Well, at least you know," a voice cuts through, making me jolt in bed.
"Adele!" I snap, turning toward her. "Ever heard of knocking?"
She crosses her arms, unimpressed. "Don't take that tone with me, boy. You're in no position to be acting like a child."
I grit my teeth, straightening up. "I'm your king, Adele. Watch your words."
She rolls her eyes, strolling over and giving me a solid smack on the back of my head.
"King, my ass," she mutters. "A true king wouldn't treat a lady so poorly." She gives me a look that could melt steel.
I scoff, rubbing my head. "Oh, don't tell me you've fallen for her charms too, Adele. Is this house cursed or something?"
"You're a child, Alexander." She moves to Cerb, patting him with affection, as if to say, See? Even the dog understands better than you do.
"Two against one?" I grumble. "That's just unfair. Even for you two."
"Fair or not, you need to fix this," she says firmly. "You should be apologizing to that poor girl."
"What should I say?" I snap, mocking her. "'Sorry my father's spirit is trapped in me and sometimes I mistake you for my mother because you look exactly like her?' Yeah, that'll go over well." My voice gets louder as frustration seeps through, making me feel more trapped than ever.
Adele's expression softens, a look of understanding passing over her face. "It's almost...uncanny how much she resembles Her Majesty."
"I can't let her go, Adele," I admit, the weight of my admission hanging in the air. "She's...she's something else."
She steps closer, placing a hand on my shoulder. "I know it's difficult, Alex. But you have to remember—she's terrified. She thinks you're a monster."
I clench my fists. "Maybe that's because I am."
"No," she says sharply, lifting my chin so I have to meet her gaze. "You are not a monster, Alex. You might have one inside you, but that's not who you are. Don't let her believe otherwise." She places both hands on my face, her touch comforting. "She could be the answer to more than you know. Don't drive her away."
"What am I supposed to do?" I mutter, feeling like a petulant child under her gaze. "Whenever we talk, it's like pouring gasoline on a fire."
"First, apologize. Then try to talk without the glares, without the intimidation. Find out what she likes."
"Easy for you to say," I mutter, already thinking of ways to excuse myself.
She raises a brow, seeing right through me. "Is it too much for you? I thought you were more than just a crybaby, Alexander."
"Crybaby—oh, you..." I grumble, shooting her a glare, but she just smirks, enjoying every second of it.
"Forget the council meeting tonight," she says. "I'll call Obrovsky; he'll handle things. Your priority is her."
I know I can't escape this, and I let out a sigh.
"What are you waiting for?" Adele asks. "Get moving."
I roll my eyes. "She's probably asleep by now."
"Bullshit," she replies with a grin. "She's in the library. That girl is a nonfiction fanatic."
"Fine, fine." I mutter, heading out of the room. "Alright, Alex, don't mess this up. She's just a girl...how hard can it be?"
