Abby's POV
Since we left the courthouse my anxiety has been through the roof. It's that feeling you get while waiting in line for a rollercoaster or before you jump out of plane to sky dive. My heart is racing and pounding in my chest. I keep telling myself there's no reason for it but the close we get to the apartment the worse it gets.
With less than a mile to go till we're home I yell out, "Stop! Stop the car Jackson!" With the screech of his tires he makes the first right available, pulling down a side road and pulls along the curb, throwing it in park and releasing his seatbelt. He shift in his seat facing me to hold my face.
"What Abby? What is it? What's wrong baby?" He pulls back giving me a once over with his eyes.
"Somethings wrong. Somethings going to happen if we go in the apartment. I can't shake this feeling and the closer we get the worse it gets. Something is trying to tell me not to go home. Go straight to the hotel." His eyes widen, but it's only a flash. If I wasn't looking at him I would've missed it. "You feel it too don't you? Why wouldn't you say something?" He sighs sitting back in his seat.
"I didn't want to alarm you. You have enough on your plate to worry about." I shake my head, release my belt and climb onto his lap.
"If the feelings you're having are as strong as mine, then you need to tell me. Because I feel like we're driving towards our death Jax."
"There's an alarm system in the apartment." He holds up his cell between us. "If someone broke in I'd get an al," the sound of an alert from the phone cuts him off. We both pull our eyes from each other to look at his phone. We don't move for a long moment. He finally brings his hand down and starts tapping away. "Fuck." He says under his breath.
"What is it?"
"Cameras aren't working." He picks me up, placing me back in my seat and buckles my seatbelt. "We have to go."
"Wait! What?" I stop his hand from putting the car on drive. "We can't even see who is in our apartment, or how many people are in our apartment and you want to go in there?" He smiles.
"A happy as you just made me by saying our apartment I can't celebrate just yet. But yes we do." He scrolls on his phone and it starts to ring through CarPlay. He throws it in the cup hold and shifts into drive.
"Jackson."
"Sergio someone is in our apartment" he smirks looking at me. "I'm on my way there now with Abby. We're a few blocks away. Call Maurice and meet us there."
"You're bringing Abby in?" There's panic in Sergio's voice.
"She's safer inside with me than alone in the car. Now get there." Jax ends the call pressing down on the gas pedal. The engine roars to life as we all but fly down the main road back to the apartment. I thought we'd wait for Sergio and the cops but Jackson was worried that who ever broke in would be gone by the time everyone got here. Coming off the elevator Jackson pulls his gun from his back and pushes me behind him. The doors opened slightly when we walk up to it. Slowly he pushes it open with his free hand aiming the gun ahead of him.Walking in the first thing I see is Celeste's hand bag and coat thrown over the couch and freeze. Why is she here? Does she know what John confessed to in court? Does she know the cops are looking for her?
"Celeste!" I yell through the apartment making Jackson flinch.
"So much for the element of surprise."
"I'd rather call her out and be ready for her. Sue me." I whisper yell. Celeste appears from the kitchen. She's all dressed up in a pants suit but her hair looks like it hasn't been washed or brushed in days and her makeup is all smudged like she slept in it. "What's going on Celeste? Why'd you break in?" She takes a few steps forward and Jax tries to block me with his body. I grab his arm holding him still as I step out from behind him to see my sister.
"I needed to see you. I didn't know he had an alarm."
"We have an alarm Celeste. It's my home now too. And you still broke in." She smiles but there no joy behind it. She hangs her head and walks around the perimeter of the room.
"Our home she says. Little miss perfect has her own home with her Fiancé. But I shouldn't be surprised. You've always gotten what you wanted."
"What are you talking about Celeste. You are married with a mansion of your own. Don't make it seem like you've never gotten everything you wanted."
"Correction, sissy. I had a husband and I had a mansion of my own. Both of which I will no longer have. And even while I had those things they were never mine or what I truly wanted. You got everything I wanted. Mom and dad's attention, John's attention, even my ex that dumped me when mom and dad died you had his attention too." she circles us like a shark, but suddenly stops. "Then, Jackson comes along. I tried to get him to speak to me for a year. Figured if my own fiance won't pay me attention or fuck me good maybe a guy right out of prison will. But no, nothing. You come down those steps and within an hour he speaks to you." She points her finger right at me. "I told you to stay away from him and instead you fuck him and live with him all the while my husband is still pining for you." Her eyes are empty as I look into them. Just a big black void. Any trace of my sister is gone. She looks like a woman off her meds and it's scaring the shit out of me.
"Celeste please. It's not my fault. Everything you went through with John. He did this. I'm your sister. I didn't start all this." She laughs manically as she reaches behind her back and pulls out a gun.
"Please Celeste. Don't do this." I beg.
"Celeste I don't want to shoot you but I will put the gun down." Jackson's voice sounds deadly.
"You're right John started this. Now I'm going to finish it." She cock the gun and my hands fly up in front of me.
"I'm pregnant!" I scream out desperate to save my babies life. I hear Jackson's breath catch at hearing he's going to be a father for the first time. He had no idea. I wanted to tell him once the trial was over.
"You're wh" the front door bursts open hitting the wall behind it with a bang. And suddenly I feel pain in my side.
"Abby!" Jackson's voice echoes in my head as I feel myself falling. Jackson catches me swooping me up. I can feel something warm and wet saturating my shirt but there's too much pain in my side to care about anything else.
"Ja-Jackson. What happened? I feel dizzy. And my side burns so bad. Jackson it hurts." I start seeing double and everything around Jackson is like a blur.
"It's gonna be okay Babygirl. Just stay awake." My eye lids start to feel heavy and I just want to close my eyes. "Stay awake Abigail. Don't close those gorgeous eyes baby. Please. Please stay with me."
"I will. I just need to close them. I'm so tired."
"Abby! No!"
That was the last thing I heard him say before everything went black.
