Chapter 28

Aki's POV

Ever since that night, I can't stop myself from worrying about Serene. Yes, I told her not to tell me what's wrong if she wasn't ready.

But that doesn't mean I stopped worrying about it. So what I did was to use my connections to know what happened. Luckily, I was able to watch the CCTV from the restaurant that night.

However, I didn't find anything significant except that it was obvious that she was talking to someone on her phone or at least it was connected to it somehow.

So I secretly hired bodyguards to protect her, just in case. Not all the time I'm with her so I decided to do that.

I know if she ever finds out about this, she'll hate me. Serene hates being watched, she hates bodyguards, since she was a kid. That's why she has no one.

So I told them to just discreetly follow her and guard her. I instructed them to keep their distance and only show up when they think she's in danger.

When I woke up without her, I panicked a little, good thing I immediately saw her note, it made my whole day.

"Ma'am, Ms. Serene has arrived safely in her mansion, I think she's going to work since she was rushing." I received a text from one of her bodyguards.

"Good. Just follow her quietly and make sure she's safe all the time. If something bad happens to her, you're done, okay?" I replied.

With that, I started my day at work with a smile. I'm really looking forward to our dinner later.

It feels like time was slower than usual. It felt like eternity. I was informed that she was currently in a trial so that made me feel at ease.

At least, she's in a safe place.

When evening came, I saw my phone ringing and I smiled when I saw she was calling.

"Hey, pretty handsome. I've missed you! How's your day?" She uttered.

"Hmmm, busy but fine. How did your hearing go?" I asked back, trying to stop myself from smiling because of her sweet voice.

"I think I did well. I don't know, it's the first trial anyways. I don't want to talk about it further. I'm on my way to you, ready for our dinner?" she answered.

"Yeah, I'm just finishing something then I'm free." I was rushing to finish my last paperwork for today.

"Okay, I'll be there in ten minutes, see you, babe." she teased.

"Tsss. Whatever, drive safely. See you in a bit." I tried to sound nonchalant.

I heard her laugh, "Of course, my baby is wait-...." She wasn't able to finish what she's saying.

The next thing I heard was she gasped loudly and I could also hear her car bumping into something.

"Hey, what is that?" I asked worriedly.

But instead of her voice answering me, I heard two gunshots which made me lose my breath.

"Serene! Hey, what's happening? Talk to me!" I shouted at the phone and was getting ready to leave the office.

"Serene!" I called once again.

Without wasting a second, I ended the call while rushing to my car. I was now calling the bodyguards I hired for her.

"Ma'am-" I cut him off.

"What's happening?! What happened to Serene?!" I asked angrily.

"Someone just bumped into her car purposely, we weren't able to notice it since the car was so fast. It happened so fast. Until we saw someone from the passenger seat pointing a gun at her. Then her car was shot two times. Attorney was shot in the chest and her arm. She was now in the ambulance with me. My partner was tailing the car."
