IT WASN'T OVER, AND MITCHELL KNEW THAT. He stared at the sky above, the sun slowly beginning to hide beneath the horizon to brighten another countries day.

The sand beneath his fingertips was course, rough and cold. He let the sound of the waves crashing against the shore wash away the outside world as he watched the world beyond him slowly fade away.

Soon, Mitchell would lose the privilege to admire the stars, stare at the moon and appreciate the sun. He wouldn't have the sand brushing against his skin and the water reaching towards him. It would all vanish as he would, like a speck of dust in the wind.

He would lose all the things he tried to protect. The demigods would no longer have him to care for them and jump into battle if they needed him to. Jade would lose a father figure, and Percy would lose his partner.

"Hey," A caring voice echoed behind him. Mitchell didn't need to turn to know who it was, he had memorised the voice years ago when his infatuate began. "What are you doing out here?"

Mitchell bit his lip, preventing himself from blurting out all his worries. "Admiring the world. We could've lost it, you know? All this, it could've been taken in an instant if it wasn't for Leo."

Percy sat down next to him and took his hands. "Leo did what he had to. He knew what he was getting himself into, and he did that knowing that we would be here, waiting for him."

Even with his boyfriend's reassurance, Mitchell knew that it wasn't the end. With his mind always on alert, sometimes he felt as though danger was always right around the corner, but this time, he knew it wasn't just a warning sign. Gaea was just another addition to one large battle, just as Kronos had been.

Leo's sacrifice didn't feel enough. The Fates knew what they wanted, and for Leo to cheat death was not what they wanted. In the minds of the Fates, it wasn't enough of a sacrifice. Not enough blood or tears, perhaps.

If his intuition was right, if the Fates wanted another sacrifice to fulfil their greed, Mitchell was ready to fill that slot. He took his family into consideration, but the benefit of future generations of demigods was far too important and he was not about to put them all at risk because he wanted to be selfish and live.

The sun dipped down halfway, the sky painted stunning colours as the two boys sat there. Mitchell wanted to cry, honestly, he did. The overwhelming feeling of death slowly creeped up behind him, breathing down his neck as he sat there. With his partner right next to him as well, love radiating off Percy like an aura made Mitchell feel even worse.

"Can I sleep with you tonight?" His voice was quiet, almost a whisper as Mitchell moved his eyes to look at Percy.

The son of Poseidon smiled gently. "Of course, baby." He cupped Mitchell's face and kissed him gently. "You don't need to ask."
