As my dad finds a parking place at the hospital in the dark, I regret having to let Ry go in the ambulance without me. The sheriff needed me to stay and tell my side of the story. At least Aussie and Savannah went with Ry. And thankfully, they took Max away in handcuffs. But the sheriff told my mom to stay in town. With her helping Max try to kidnap me and not stepping in to stop it, the sheriff thinks she will be in trouble too.
When the story started to unfold, my dad was shocked that my mom helped Max. My mom was standing nervously off to the side as I was giving my statement. When I got to the part where my mom gave him the zip tie and duct tape my father turned to her, aghast. "You helped him with this?!" He shook his head in disgust.
My mom had desperation in her eyes, "I thought that was what you would want!" Her voice begged him to understand her. "You wanted them to get back together!"
My father looked sickened, "I don't want her with someone abusive! Did you see what he did to her?!" He shook his head more and walked my way, "Has he hurt you before, Honey?"
I shook my head, "Not like this. Just little things like pinches or holding my wrist too tight."
My father's lips tightened but then he wrapped his arms around me in a hug, "I'm so sorry. I was blind to what Max is really like. I thought you two were good for each other. I thought he'd take care of you."
I nestled into my father's chest, grateful for the love and support he was finally giving me. "It's okay." It doesn't make up for everything he said and did but I felt closer to him than I had in a long time.
The sheriff cleared his throat, "Are you able to continue?" I proceeded to tell him the rest.
But now, finally, we are at the hospital. Aussie texted to say that Ry woke up. I felt so much relief knowing that. But then he texted for us to hurry so now I'm worried again.
As we enter the hospital we see Savannah point to us and a nurse rushes over, "Brooklyn?" I nod. "Come on back, Mr. Adler is extremely worried about you." As my dad and I follow her she explains. "When Chase woke he was thrashing around, refusing to get care until he saw that you were safe. We gave him a light sedative but he's still agitated and we can't safely give him more until we assess the damage to his head."
She shuffles us into a room. Ry is laying on the hospital bed and there's blood on his ear and cheek. He pushes the doctor's hand away as it comes up to his head. I hear the anger in his voice but he sounds tired, I'm guessing from the sedative. "Where's Buttercup? I need my girl."
"Ry, I'm here!" I rush to the bed and his eyes rake over me. He grabs my hand.
"Are you okay?" I nod. I feel immense relief that he is awake and talking. I feel my whole body relax now that I see him alert.
I take Ry's hand in both of mine, "I'm fine, you saved me." He gives me a worried look, so I squeeze his hand and assure him, "I'm safe, Ry."
I see the doctor start to work on the back of Ry's head, cleaning it as Ry's fingers come up to my bruised cheek. Anger flashes through his eyes, "He hurt you, Baby."
I pull his fingers back down into my hands, "I'm okay now. The sheriff took Max away." I see the anger dissipate in Ry's face then his eyelids droop. The doctor orders us out of the room so he can clean and stitch up Ry's head.
In the hallway, my dad pulls me in for another hug. "Honey, I'm so sorry." He looks down into my eyes, "I was wrong. That boy in there really cares about you. You picked better for yourself than I did."
I nod, "Ry's a really good guy, Dad. It would mean a lot to me if you and Mom could accept him."
He takes a deep breath, "I do. It's obvious he loves you. You should have seen him when we heard the car horn go off. He took off like an Olympic runner. Pheonix and I couldn't keep up with him." I smile up at my dad. It warms my heart that Ry loves me that much and wants to protect me. "And, he was also immune to Savannah's flirting. Every time she talked to him he asked about you. Questions about you guys growing up, what you were like. We all figured out pretty quickly that he only has eyes for you." I don't know whether to be glad Ry wasn't attracted to Savannah or mad at her for flirting with my boyfriend. I guess I'll be both.
