You hadn't seen Hanami in hours, which was unusual given the spirit's aversion to being apart from you for too long. The warm, earthy smell that always accompanied them had lingered faintly in the air, teasing you with their proximity. But when they finally emerged from the forest thicket, their broad shoulders were weighed down by more than the vines that adorned them.

You sat up straighter, the sunlight spilling through the window casting a golden glow over the wooden floor of your shared home. "Hanami?"

Their moss-covered face tilted in your direction, but their usually steady movements seemed hesitant. As they approached, you noticed something tucked carefully in their arms. Your heart skipped a beat.

"Is that...?" You stood, crossing the room in a few quick steps.

Hanami's deep voice resonated in your chest. "A bird. Injured." They turned their arms slightly to reveal a small sparrow, its wing bent unnaturally. The tiny creature looked fragile cradled against Hanami's bark-like skin, but they handled it with such gentleness that you couldn't help but smile.

"You've been looking after it?"

They nodded solemnly. "Nature must nurture its young." Their words carried a wistful undertone, one you'd heard before but never quite like this.

You took a careful breath, watching them stroke the bird's tiny head with a vine that extended from their wrist. "You've been thinking about it again, haven't you?"

Hanami's gaze met yours, their eyes—if you could call them that—glinting with something raw. "Children are the future of this world. They are what we fight for. To see life grow from seedling to strong... that is beauty."

Your chest tightened. "You know it's not... possible for us. Not in the way you mean."

The silence that followed was heavy, the only sound the soft chirping of the injured bird. Hanami's vines seemed to tense, wrapping protectively around the little creature. "I know," they said finally, their voice quieter than you'd ever heard it. why did this bitch add vines..

You reached out, resting a hand on their arm. Their bark was warm beneath your fingers, pulsing faintly with life. "But that doesn't mean we can't have a family."

Hanami turned to you sharply, their vines twitching. "What do you mean?"

"Adoption," you said simply. "There are children out there—human and non-human—who need someone to care for them, someone to protect them. Just like you protect this forest."

Their head tilted, the leaves that crowned them rustling softly. "But they would not come from us. They would not carry our essence."

You nodded. "No, they wouldn't. But family isn't just about blood, is it? It's about love, about choosing each other."

For a moment, Hanami was still, their expression unreadable. Then, they gently handed the bird to you, their vines lingering as if reluctant to let it go. "I would choose you. Every time."

You smiled, cradling the bird close. "And I'd choose you. So why not choose someone else to bring into our life? Someone who needs us."

Hanami's vines began to shift, curling and uncurling like the roots of a tree testing new soil. "It would be... different. Unnatural, perhaps."

"Unnatural doesn't mean wrong," you said softly. "Look at us. Nothing about this—" you gestured between the two of you, "—is natural. But it works. Because we make it work."

They stared at you for a long moment before their shoulders relaxed, the tension in their vines easing. "You believe we could give a child a good life?"

"I do," you said firmly. "And I think you'd be an amazing parent. You already care so deeply, Hanami. Imagine what you could teach a child about the world, about nature."

A low hum emanated from them, the sound reverberating through the room like the rumble of distant thunder. "Then we will do this. Together."

Relief and joy flooded through you. You stepped closer, leaning your head against their chest. "Together."

Hanami's arms encircled you, their vines brushing against your back in a gentle embrace. "But we will need to prepare," they said, their tone thoughtful. "Children require shelter, sustenance... patience."

You laughed softly. "We've got time. And I'm sure you'll pick up a thing or two as we go."

Hanami's grip tightened briefly before they pulled back to look at you. "This will be good," they said, conviction deepening their voice. "To nurture life, to protect it... This is what I was made for."

You smiled up at them, feeling a warmth in your chest that rivaled the sunlight streaming in. "And it's what we'll do. Together."

The injured bird chirped in your hands, as if echoing the sentiment. And for the first time in what felt like forever, you and Hanami allowed yourselves to hope for a future that felt as bright and boundless as the forest beyond.
