Weeks later...

The car ride to the hospital was stifling, the air thick with worry. Hoseok slumped in the backseat, dressed in sweatpants and a sweater with the hood pulled up to shield his pale, gaunt face. His nose was red from constant sniffling, and his swollen eyes burned from lack of rest. He felt utterly drained. The past week had been hell. Every morning, he woke up vomiting violently, unable to keep anything down. The fever medication from the pharmacy only seemed to make things worse.

“Did you take anything you shouldn’t have, Hoseok?” his mother asked from the front seat, her tone sharp but edged with concern.

Hoseok cracked his eyes open, the effort exhausting. “I… I don’t know,” he murmured weakly, his voice barely audible.

His mother sighed, rolling her eyes as she turned to his father. “Honestly, kids these days don’t even know what they put into their bodies.”

Hoseok groaned softly and leaned his head against the cool window. He just wanted to feel better.

The car finally pulled up to the hospital, the tires crunching against the pavement. “We’re here,” his father announced, parking the car.

Hoseok’s parents stepped out, his mother quickly circling to his side. With trembling hands, Hoseok opened the door and carefully stepped out. His legs felt like jelly, and he clung to the car for a moment before closing the door behind him.

“Hurry up,” his mother urged, gently placing a hand on his back as they walked toward the entrance. Hoseok’s steps were slow and unsteady, his head swimming with nausea.

They entered the hospital, the automatic doors sliding open with a soft whoosh. The sterile smell of antiseptic filled Hoseok’s nose, making him more sick. His mother approached the receptionist, explaining the situation.

The receptionist nodded, typing quickly into her computer. “Please take a seat. A nurse will call you shortly.”

The family moved to the waiting area. Hoseok collapsed into a chair, his hood still up as he rested his head against the wall. His parents exchanged worried glances, his mother tapping her foot impatiently.

A nurse appeared after a few minutes, clipboard in hand. “Jung Hoseok?”

His mother immediately stood, helping Hoseok to his feet. They followed the nurse down a quiet corridor to a consultation room. Inside, a doctor in a white coat greeted them with a professional smile.

“Good afternoon,” the doctor said, gesturing for them to sit. Hoseok dropped into the chair furthest from the desk, his head heavy and eyes half-lidded. His parents took the chairs directly across from the doctor.

“So,” the doctor began, looking at Hoseok. “Let’s go over a few things. Have you been experiencing any other symptoms aside from the vomiting and fever?”

Hoseok barely lifted his head. “No… Just tired,” he muttered.

“Any unusual pain? Dizziness?”

Hoseok shook his head weakly.

“Have you consumed anything out of the ordinary recently? New foods or drinks?”

His mother interjected. “We’ve asked him the same thing. He says he doesn’t know.”

The doctor nodded thoughtfully, scribbling notes on his clipboard. “Alright. We’ll start with some basic tests. Hoseok, I’ll need a urine sample.” He handed a sterile tube to Hoseok. “Take this to the restroom down the hall and return it to me once you’re done.”

Hoseok took the tube silently, too weak to argue. With slow, dragging steps, he left the room. His parents exchanged another glance, his mother sighing in frustration.

Minutes later, Hoseok returned, handing the tube to the doctor without a word. The doctor smiled reassuringly. “Thank you. I’ll be back shortly with the results.”

Hours passed. Hoseok had fallen asleep in his chair, his face peaceful despite his pale complexion. His parents sat quietly, his mother occasionally glancing at her watch while his father stared out the window.

The door finally opened, and the doctor walked in, holding a sheet of paper. He sank into his chair with a sigh, placing the paper on the desk.

“What do the results say?” Hoseok’s father asked, leaning forward.

The doctor hesitated, his expression unreadable. “The results are… surprising. This is an incredibly rare case.”

Hoseok’s mother immediately tensed. “Is it cancer?” she asked, her voice sharp with panic.

The doctor shook his head quickly. “No, not cancer.” He paused for a moment before continuing. “Hoseok is three weeks pregnant.”

The room went silent.

Hoseok’s mother blinked, her mouth opening and closing as if trying to process the words.

His father, however, burst into laughter. “What?” he said incredulously, shaking his head as if the doctor had just told a ridiculous joke.

The doctor remained serious, the paper still clutched in his hand. The weight of the revelation hung heavy in the air, the laughter fading into a stunned silence.
