The days that followed felt heavier than usual. Gabriella kept busy, throwing herself into her candle business, her shifts at the hotel, and trying to organize the chaos of her life. But no matter how much she worked, the thoughts of Zay and his dangerous past kept creeping in.

She knew he cared for her, but the more she reflected, the more she realized how much she'd been holding onto hope rather than facing the reality of their situation. She'd built herself up from nothing, finally carving out a space that was truly hers. Was she really ready to risk it all for someone whose past wasn't as far behind him as he wanted her to believe?

A few days later, Gabriella found herself at her usual coffee shop, a small refuge where she could clear her head. She'd been avoiding Zay's calls and texts, not out of spite, but because she needed clarity. She had made a promise to herself to focus on her own future, something she hadn't done in a long time.

As she sat at the window, sketching designs for a new candle line, she saw Zay standing outside, his eyes scanning the crowd. Their gazes met, and for a moment, everything around them seemed to fade.

Gabriella stood up, her heart pounding. She wasn't sure if she was ready for this, but she knew she couldn't keep running from it either.

Zay walked in, looking unsure but determined. "Gabby," he said, his voice quiet but steady.

"Zay," she replied, swallowing the lump in her throat.

There was a pause as they both took a seat across from each other. The silence between them was thick with unspoken words.

"I've been thinking a lot," Gabriella began, her voice firm. "About everything."

Zay nodded, his expression serious. "Yeah? Me too."

"I need to know if I can trust you," Gabriella continued, her eyes meeting his. "If you really are out of that life. Because if I can't, I can't keep doing this."

Zay's eyes softened. "You can trust me, Gabby. I swear, I'm done with all of that. The people I'm dealing with now, they ain't the same. I've made mistakes, but I'm trying to make it right. I just need you to believe in me."

Gabriella hesitated. She wanted to believe him, but the fear in her chest was growing. She couldn't afford to get tangled in his world, no matter how much she cared for him.

"You don't have to make me believe, Zay," she said slowly. "You just have to show me. Every day."

Zay sat back in his chair, his eyes never leaving hers. "I'll show you. Every day, if I have to."

The sincerity in his voice made Gabriella's heart ache. She wanted to give him a chance, but part of her still felt like she was standing on the edge of a cliff, afraid to fall.

After a long pause, Zay spoke again, his voice softer. "I know I haven't made it easy for you, Gabby. But if you need space, I'll give it to you. I'll respect whatever you decide."

Gabriella's fingers trembled as she placed her coffee cup back on the table. "I just don't want to get hurt, Zay. I've worked too hard to build something for myself."

Zay leaned forward, his gaze intense but calm. "I get that. And I won't let anything hurt you. You have my word."

Gabriella took a deep breath, her chest tight with the weight of everything they'd discussed. She wasn't ready to make any promises, but she was willing to take one more step forward—on her terms.

"Alright," she said, her voice quieter now. "I'll give you a chance. But no more secrets. If I'm gonna trust you, you have to trust me."

Zay's lips curled into a small smile, the relief in his eyes undeniable. "No more secrets. I promise."

As they stood up to leave, Zay walked her to the door. He didn't try to kiss her, didn't try to pull her into his world any more than he already had. Instead, he simply smiled, as if knowing this moment was the beginning of something new, even if neither of them knew exactly where it would go.

Gabriella stepped outside, the sun hanging low in the sky. For the first time in a long while, she felt like she was on the right path—her own path. Zay might still be in her life, but she wasn't going to lose herself in the process.

As she walked toward her apartment, Gabriella felt a renewed sense of purpose. She had learned to stand on her own, and no matter what happened with Zay, she would never forget that.

She would never stop building her future, one step at a time.
