"THAT IS all for today. Meeting adjourned."
I exited the conference room in long strides with my secretary trailing closely behind me after having a board meeting with the company's shareholders to discuss the development of our new hotel chain in Tokyo. Everyone in the meeting seemed to be satisfied with the progress and made no objections so far. They were confident in my capabilities to bring this new project into another huge success and would further solidify our reputation in the industry.
Ever since I took my late father's position as the CEO of the Amamiya Group, I brought our family's company to new heights and expanded our businesses globally in just a few years. The once-declining company was now one of the most powerful and leading corporations in the business world under my tutelage with billions in revenue.
"What is my next schedule?" I asked my secretary, Shizune, as we made our way back to my office. She was a competent young woman in her early twenties who was hired by one of my husband's top executives, Kokonoi Hajime, to work as my personal assistant. I did not know where he had found her, but she was very efficient in her job and always had everything prepared for me in advance.
"You have a meeting with the design team for the hotel project at 4 pm, followed by a dinner meeting with the Vice President of the Murakami Group at 7 pm," Shizune replied formally, checking her tablet for my schedule.
"Alright, make sure everything is set up and ready for both meetings," I instructed, entering my spacious office with floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking the city skyline. "Is there anything else?"
Shizune nodded. "Yes, there's a wedding invitation sent to you from someone named Hayashida Haruki."
I paused. A wedding invitation? "Where is it?" I asked.
"It's on your desk, Sa--Amamiya-san."
I approached my desk and saw a white envelope with the couple's name written on it. I sat down and read the contents of the invitation. A faint smile spread across my face as I remembered my own wedding a few years back. The ceremony was simple and yet still memorable with the two of us reciting our own vows of eternal love and commitment. Only a few trusted people had gathered to witness our matrimonial union. My husband wanted to hold a grand wedding for us, but I would rather keep everything intimate and private.
Maybe, I should accept the wedding invite. It wouldn't hurt to meet old friends, right? "Shizune, I'll attend the wedding. Clear up my schedule for that day. Cancel all my appointments."
Shizune was about to protest, but quickly changed her mind and simply obliged. "Understood. I'll handle the necessary arrangements."
"Thank you, Shizune. You may leave."
